Unhappy Fixing bad gas milage

Hi guys, I was looking up threads for fixing bad gas milage, and I came across one in which someone suggested the following:

"check out coolant temp sensor - tells the ecu to lean out mixture when temp rises,
air intake temperature.
checkout the voltage of the TPS sensor.."

My question is, is the coolant temp sensor the same thing as the thermostat? If it isn't, where is it and how do I go about changing it? How about the air intake temperature sensor? Where is it located? Lastly, what and where is the TPS sensor?

I guess the more useful question is, how do I know if they are faulty and giving me problems? Are they expensive parts to replace?

Thanks everyone.

It's down about 30% from 2 months ago... about 400 km per tank. I used to get 550 km per tank with the same driving pattern.

whoa 550 per tank is amazing

well, tune up? check ur airfilter? sparks? pcvvalve?

put some injector cleaner in there, u'll see an increase in milage for that tank u put it in.. but maybe it'll stay like that? iunno

or maybe u just warm up ur car longer since its the winter and you dont realize that its taking up gas hehe

My distributor cap, rotor, spark plug, plug wires, air filter, pcv valve are all relatively new. I've also tried injector cleaner but to no avail. I had the timing checked too but found it's fine.

gas mileage does certainly decrease in the winter, there was a tread on this. Try a fuel system flush

yah the snow definately kills the milage, spininng wheels, dragg, areodynamics of having ice chunks all over the car, winter tires...ect ect

to check the voltage of your TPS take a volt meter, and jam the ends into the wires at the clip, its on your throttle body, id need a pic for you to see exactly... but when you find it and plug in the volt meter, you open and close the throttle manually, and the voltmeter will give a voltage change... Ill have to look up the wire colours and voltage range... ive explaned it on here before, maybe try a TCC search on zex nitrous kit installs(cuz it involves testing the TPS), or just TPS ...

id also need a pic to show the coolent temp sensor, but you should be able to find it, it should be the only sensor that pluggs into the cooling system( somewhere on the same side as the transmission, pluggs into the engine block /maybe thermostat housing area/ , not a hose, if i remember correctly) and no its not the same thing as the thermostat...

Hi BoOsTZeX, thanks for the info... but it'd be great if you could post pics of the TPS (what does that stand for anyway?) and the coolant temperature sensor. You can either post them here or PM me, and that'd be much appreciated. What does the TPS do?

I tried to search for the TPS thread that you posted earlier but couldn't find it... It's not this thread is it?
