The fine line between performance and effeciency

So I've got a 98 Civic 1.6L SOHC. Its totally stock and I feel like making some changes but am primarly concerned with fuel costs. I also wouldn't want to do something that upon any type of inspection is deemed not str33tlegal.

How much difference in fuel consumtion would things like a new exaust and a new air intake make?

What I really want is the cheeziest civic out there. I want to make my stock exhaust look like a duel exhaust. One side would be working and the other would shoot out cooked rice! That would be bomb guy yo.

imported_G2 Speed 13-Jul-2005 11:09 PM

air intake and exaust shouldn't make that much of a difference and isn't street legal, unless it won't pass emissions or your exaust is to loud....

for the last part.... your messed up

bbarbulo 13-Jul-2005 11:17 PM

a nicely tuned stock engine is the most fuel efficient and reliable. I wouldn't touch a thing.

exaust too loud? nah man, i just passed safty and E-Test with flying colours last week and having a loud exhaust has siht all to do with anything...you can hear me coming from like 2 blocks away and that's with the resanator on...when i frist got my 2.5inch catbac.. hahah funny just to think about it with the resantor, i would be in 4th gear and you would think it's in 2nd because it was soo loud :haha:

nice day :marchmell

imported_G2 Speed 13-Jul-2005 11:43 PM

i'm just saying for the fact of getting a ticket...

catalyst 14-Jul-2005 12:00 AM

No, for exhaust yes I'd want headers, and a high flo cat but a quiet muffler (high flo too?) for me.

No loud exhaust on this Honda please.

imported_G2 Speed 14-Jul-2005 12:11 AM

don't waste your money on headers... and a high flow cat... your not putting more air into your car so you don't need to get rid of that extra "air"..

just keep it stock like bbarbulo said

:nods:

Nova_Dust 14-Jul-2005 02:35 PM

To answer your question, no, fuel efficiency is more or less the same.

what are you kidding about that last part?

your gas mileage will barely change, and if you're like most people getting an exhaust is really just a fancy word for "im buying a muffler"..in which case its just going to make your car loud and annoying ...perfect mix for getting a ticket.

catalyst 14-Jul-2005 09:31 PM

You people are f@%*ed.

I had heard good things about this board but it seems like maybe theres a bit too much ego here.

Ok so far I've learned Steve_Leitner has no sense of humour and takes things a bit serious and stock94block can't read.

stock94block - as I already stated I'm thinking of getting a new exhaust - from the header right back - and I also said I don't want a loud muffler. Maybe I should have used some cute emoticons in my post but I didn't see any smiley faces reading the full thread before commenting.

I love my car but I want more performance from it. Not knowing much about this I'd assume an intake and exhaust would be a good start, but wouldn't want to do anything that I'll notice at the pumps.

i can read just fine my friend, but when you say you want to turn your car into a joke and add a dual exhaust that shoots rice, im trying to figure out if we're dealing with a 12 year old or not; which ends up in me not even bothering to read this whole thread and give you a straight up answer.

and my answer is still the same, your gas mileage will barely be affected ..I dont know how cute emotions will make your post sound anymore serious but heres a couple i've picked out for you :tsk:
