Failed emissions test B16A

I dont know what's up.

I failed in these 3 areas:

HC ppm (Limit 86): Reading --> 181

CO% (Limit 0.48): Reading --> 0.74

NO ppm (Limit: 993): Reading --> 2180

This swap was done in March '04. Along with the swap, a new distributer cap and rotor was installed and also a new high-flow catalytic convertor. It passed emissions with flying colours at that time. Now that I have to renew my validation sticker I need this emissions test done.

This is what I've replaced / repaired since March '04:

-New NGK Platinum Spark Plugs
-replaced stock muffler with a 2.25" Sebring muffler
-changed oil every 5K kms with Mobil 1 10W30 and oem honda filter

There are no codes thrown on the PR3 ecu.

There was confusion when the swap was done because there was this fluctuating idle. We kept this crazy fluctuating idle for the first emissions test where it passed with no problems.

At a Honda-Tech meet, a couple of guys fixed this crazy idle by swapping some vacuum lines. It runs smooth now with a constant idle of 750.

This "swapping" of vacuum lines is my first suspect.
I will have to check the O2 sensors as well but I don't think it is very old at all... (plus there are no codes thrown).

Can anyone add some advice?

Thanks

I saw someone elses e-test thread and they have the same motor... but he tested it as "HOT ROD". I see that the limits are much higher and I would have passed everything except for NOppm. If you take a emissons test with the category "HOT ROD", does your insurance rate go up? Does it affect anything at all?

i hope my insurance doesn't go up being tested under hot rod class. but the person said this isn't a stock block so it SHOULD be tested under hot rod specs

I passed mine under hot rod, i don't think that insurance has anything to do with emissions.

Cool. But does anyone know how the NOppm can be lowered?

LOL your insurince wont go up. if it not one of the engins that comes in the vehical "stock" then it can be concidered a hot rod but depending on the person testing the car you may have to prove it to them. as for nocks you can talk to a auto tec or run the car on 2 speed idol. unfortunatly if the car isnt awd or have non disengage able traction control you cant run 2 speed idol. BUT if your car is to low to the ground and its an above ground dino they may do a 2 speed !!! if you have coilovers can it.

nox is cause by very hot combustion chamber it is when the nitrogen and the o2 combine to make oxides of nitrogen when your fuel is slightly rich you can lower the NOx but the you will raise your HC`s

did you watch them do the emissions test and if you did, did they use the big cooling fan but anyways NOx is tricky to control

and did you fail on idle or the ASM 25/25 test

oh and stop screwing around with cam gears, set them back to stock for the test cause the overlap ****s with NoX also

Ok, I found my old e-test papers... good til May '05!!!

But I kinda found the source of the problem. If I re-route the vaccum lines to make the motor run lean, I would be able to get those lower numbers.

I have to also work on my IACV. It was leaking a bit of coolant. I should rinse the unit out with brake cleaner and buy a new little gasket.

Other than that I think my motor is still running strong.

Thanks for your inputs guys.

BTW, here's my new B-day present

I have a 90 w/B16A, I told them that I had done an engine swap and that it was similar to an integra's engine (hot rod). They tested it as an integra and passed no problem and that was 15 mins after pulling it out of storage for 9 months...as long as the engine is not any older than the car (must be same year or newer) then the shop shouldn't have a problem. you dont gotta trick it or anything, just take it as is and as long as it runs good you're fine...so dont waste your time swapping ECUs, changing timing, vac lines, etc...

the shop wont tell your insurance...I told my insurance company so that I could get an "agreed value replacement" if the car was destroyed...you gotta get an appraisal n ****, and the coverage is a little more money but I think it's worth it cause I know I'm not gonna get screwed if something happens...I'm with ING insurance.

Ya I guess if you tell your insurance company the truth, you can't get screwed over.

How much are you paying ING per month may I ask?

My lowest quote from some company was $375/month.
I'm 21, no accidents, G2, one ticket this year, 2 tickets 3years ago.

I can't seem to find a lower quote. I even tried RBC and they said Basic Coverage is $480/month for me. That is horrible.
