I have a high flow cat....could that be the problem? Any ideas?

EGR not functioning is the first thing to check for

proper sized/heat range plugs

your combustion temps are way high - very close to detonation. What's your fuel pressure at? Is your fuel filter good?

ok, i just had a quick look at it so i dident notice the "NO" But For all i know u might just talk out of your ***, j/k......reason for asking is depending on what part of the test u fail you can test it differently to exclude certian readings.......trust me i do this for a living.....i'll ask a tech at workfor there 2 cents

The fuel filter's good ...need to look at the fuel pressure though.. I also noticed rattling from my exhaust, sounds like the cat.

NOx readings that high usually indicate an EGR problem. Even with a blown cat (which if it rattles it prolly is blown), you should be able to pass emissions for 1990.

i agree, checked with the "big guy" and he said nox failure is 99% of the time EGR and or timing, but if u can find a shop that will do it for u, or your car is low enough u can get a 2-speed idle done and it will pass no question (just as long as nox was the only thing u failed) but just so u know as soon as u ajust one reading anouther one will go up (if timing is agusted) but if its the egr every thing will tay the same i believe

hey man if his motor is USDM there is no EGR, unless he's running an accord F series engine, JDM 5th gen engines have egr valves. just think punched out cat. the cat has a specific job to lower emissions if you don't have a cat that's doing it's job right you will fail emissions.

i have a contact for emissions if you want pm me

Regards,

don't listen to everything you read on these boards man

Doug

No EGR on an EF??? that's news to me anyone with an EF wanna give some input here? EGR is not a new technology... anyways, cats have the job of converting exhaust that's left over from combustion... the NOx reading he has is too far off from what he should have left over after combustion anyways, so he's obviously got an engine problem.

This would be a good time to pick up a repair manual and look for the problem yourself. I've had much luck learning about emissions and driveability controls from Chilton manuals on my other cars. I haven't had to do any work on my EF yet, so I don't know.

Is your timing set properly, and what kinda fuel do you run. higher octane reduces combustion temps, and NOx as such.

I'm running 87 right now. Haven't checked the timing, yet.

when you go for your test, check timing and valve lash, have fresh spark plugs in there and run 92 or 94 sunoco octane... rawk the highway for a while (1/2 hour cruize outta do it) and then go for your test. You should see HC jump a little bit, but should lower your NOx.

the two things that matter the most are the o2 sensor, and the cat. if you have a free flow cat. that's the problem. however if it's just a little over try a tune up, new cap rotor wires, oil change, plugs, and valve adjustment, that helps a lot

good luck

O2 sensor affect HC values, NOT NOx values

it's the god damn cat man free flow cat means no emission test passing.
