i was driving around last week and all of a sudden my shifter dropped down and started vibrating on my exhaust..it looks like the boot that holds it up ripped and now everytime i wanna shift i have to pull it up like a few inches......anyone know how much these things cost to fix (replace) and if i have a short shifter does it make a difference in terms of replacing it?

The shift linkage is bolted to the body of the car isn't it? why is the boot holding it up?

everything has been kept stock and its not broken anywhere else so yes it is bolted to the car but the shifter itself has dropped down through the opening and rests on the exhaust and all i saw underneath it was a torn boot. so i dunno what it could be.

Sounds like the one bushing the holds the whole linkage up in the car has fallen out or broken.

It's kind of a restangular bushing held in by a peice of steel with two bolts. The bolts may have broken off or something.... Throw the car up on some jack stands, grab a light and check it out....
