Exhaust Vibration at idle.

I got a new exhaust and i noticed something today, sometimes, not too often, when im idling, my exhaust will all of a sudden get louder and the whole car starts vibrating. Is it because somethings not properly installed, or is it a faulty exhaust, or maybe its normal?
Thanks.

I just went out to get gas and noticed it also happens right before i come to a stop, and right when i leave a stop. It kinda sounds like popcorn popping.

do u have rez? if u have no rez and cat only and a straight pipe it will vibrate like that its normal.

jack the car up and put it securely on jack stands.
Get underneath the car and grab the exhaust and move it around, check to see if its rubbing against anything.
Then start the car (make sure its in NEUTRAL) and check to see if the exhaust is rubbing up against anything.

Well my exhaust is kind of loose, like i can grab the tip and move it from side to side. But why would this noise only happen at idle, if it was rubbing wouldnt that mean the noise would be there all the time?
And yes i have a resonator.

imported_spl_civic 17-Oct-2005 03:59 PM

mine did that when my resonator blew...it would get worse and worse
not saying this is your problem, but just some info into the noise

imported_Moe_Mentum 20-Oct-2005 11:09 AM

wow your resonator can go bad? what does that sound like or what are the symptoms?

imported_Green_Goblin 20-Oct-2005 11:21 AM

Ok I think I may know why this is happening. Dont really see why it would happen when you stop, but when you move, your car vibrates since your putting pressure on the car since your getting it into motion. It doesnt vibrate when your already moving since its not much stress. Its like the vibration you get when the car is about to stall. Put it in first gear and just slowly lift ur foot off the clutch..u'll hear it again.

Do you have a body kit?? check and see if your exhaust tip is touching the body kit, if so, when your car vibrates the body kit hits the tip and makes that sound also. I used to have that problem but Ive just started to focus better on my shifting, specially at a high friction stage (1st gear and sometimes 2nd). Give it a lil more gas and it shouldnt struggle.

If its still unbearable then jack it up, get under there and fill all the spacings and gaps between objects that come into contact with the exhaust.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Green Goblin. I think you have the right idea. At first i was worried my resonator was bad, after one of the replies, but the exhaust is not loud. It just sounds like a knocking noise, and since i dont have a bodykit, i think the vibration is hitting the under body. My exhaust seems a little loose as well, i can grab it by the tip and shake it. I will have a look, this weekend.

Any suggestions as to what i can fill the space with? I was thinking header wrap but wouldn't that cause rust?

Thanks again for all your help.

imported_Green_Goblin 25-Oct-2005 11:41 AM

you'll need ALOOOOT of header wrap to fill the gaps. But then again, my mind is blank when it comes to filling spaces :(

Sorry bud

imported_italstallion 25-Oct-2005 11:56 AM

maybe if its loose and hitting the car you could get a thick rubber peice and wedge it between the car and the exhaust??? that would reduce all the noise and not make it hit,it would make it alot firmer

A rubber piece is not a bad idea. Ill go for a drive to crappy tire tommorow and see what they have. Thanks for all the help again. :)

kwikb16a2 25-Oct-2005 05:37 PM

lol i dunt think rubber is a good idea, unless u like the smell of burning rubber

RDub99 25-Oct-2005 05:48 PM

if its not hanging properly just cut off the hangars and get a shop to weld you on some new ones that hang it properly.. shouldn't cost much more than $20..
