Exhaust Piping Size????

What size should my exhaust pipe be after my 4-2-1 DC Sports Header????

Should I have the resonator removed??? and finally your suggestions on a high flow muffler. I dislike the silencer look and I would like a muffler that will not wake the entire neighbourhood.

Sound samples if you have them would be AWESOME!

Thanks for the input.

magnaflow..mine sounds a hair sweeter (louder) than stock, but is definitely hi-flow..

2.5" after the cat (hi-flow cats are available)

ya, pull the resonator

wow, all these dumbass answers, and no one asked what motor he's got.

BTW, Si Veloz got it right, prolly since he reads the forums and knows Konig just had a B16A swapped in at Altech... so 2.5" Magnaflow for a B16A is right on the money.

2.25 .... well, toyman29, whatchaknow about about Hondas man... why you giving out advice on something you've never owned.

also, you can get away with removing a cat or a resonator.... BUT I would not recommend doing neither. A 18-24 inch resonator will make your car have a bit of a rumble.... it won't sound like a weedwhacker.

Thanks for the feedback guys,
2.5" inch it is. I will leave the resonator alone. I had no plans to remove the cat due to emissions. I was wondering if the high flow cats actually work. It seems to me that they wouldn't.

High flow, cat & emissions it doesn't sound right!?!?!?!?

high flow or not is irrelevant... it just has to pass over a ceramic matrix of some sort to catalyze the pollutants - the fact it flows more is a bonus. High flow cats do NOT affect emissions as long as they warm up quickly. Good ones like Magnaflow, Dynomax, Random Technology, Catco, and Carsound are all acceptable alternatives. The JDM ITR also rocks a 2.5 inch cat. Bigger engines benefit more from having a high flow cat... if you have the funds, I would get a new cat as well.

hey si veloz

I noticed your post about the magnaflow exhaust.

I've got a b18b in my civic and I've *currently* got on it a new cat, a 14 inch resonator with a no-name three chamber (4x9 oval) performance muffler. The car is loud whenever I accelerate, also, whenever I am near 3000 rpm. The car is actually quiet below and above 3000 rpm. Its got the typical "4 banger 3000 rpm drone" problem... When I drive long distances I either have to drive at 110 km/h or 135 km/h to avoid the 3000 rpm drone. Oh ya, and the piping is all crush bent 2.25". The car is really fast with this exhaust, and I noticed a massive improvement in performance. Its super quiet especially below 3000 rpm so driving in the city is very nice.

In my basement, I have a brand new magnaflow exhaust complete catback that has a big resonator and canister style muffler. It came directly from magnaflow this way, and requires minor assembly. It is also 2.25 inches and is mandrel bent. I can see there is a space for a baffle in the muffler, but it didn;t come with one. Is this the same exhaust you (Si Veloz) have on your car? Is it really quiet or is it annoyingly lound on the highway?

I just don't want to waste time installing it and be disapointed.

I want quiet but the stock exhaust was too restrictive. I don't want to buy used integra exhausts cause I only want new parts...

My current setup is slightly annoying. Help! Sorry for the thread *****.

a stock b16 will still be hard pressed to push enough volume to take advantage of 2.5 piping...mayeb with cams and what not but i/h/e I'd still say 2.25 with a big resonator and a non canister style muffler..and your header has a 2 1/4 outlet anyway so keep it stream lined.... unless it's the jdm replica which has a 2.5 outlet...if it was bigger liek an itr motor than yes but it's jsut a b16 without cams

I'd keep 2.25 reserved for the single cam... and extra 30 hp over the single cam is better utilized with a 2.5 inch. It's true that low end torque will suffer a bit, but in VTEC you'll be far happer, and I'm sure you didn't buy a B16A cuz it's a torque monster

Bottom line is, we can argue this till we're blue in the face. Yeah, 2.5 inch is slightly oversized, but I feel 2.25 is slightly undersized... and besides that if you are having this made, I'm pretty sure you'll go crush bent, in which case 2.25 is definitely too small. The LS 140 hp that j23t has can do well with this setup, BUT there is still an extra 20 hp on top of that from the 160 hp B16A. This is the reasoning behind my answer.

j23t

mine atm is strictly the muffler..
waiting for the $$ to do cat back..
Magnaflow makes 1000 different mufflers so chances are they'll be different..i just walked into a place local to me that a few of us have dealt with and told them what i was looking for..high-flow with oem (or as near as possible) noise levels..and w/o having to run a silencer..

it's so quiet in fact that when i do get the cat-back done i'm gonna pop the resinator so i can actually hear it over my intake

my suggestion would be to see if you can find a part # on the muffler somewhere and get in touch with magnaflow and see what they say about it..

hmmmm..i don't have any drones either..she be quiet thru the whole range..

hope that halped ya out..holler up if theres anything else i can do

magnaflow has two series of performance mufflers.
street and race. the street series actually has the silencer built into it. if u look into a street series muffler, you'll actually see the silencer hidden.

for example, the muffler that came with the 01+ catback system by magnaflow has an 20" (i think) resonator and a street muffler with a 4" tip with 2.25 stainless mandrel bent piping. if you look down the tip, you'll see the silencer hidden down there. i am currently running this system and it's actually the same as stock under normal driving conditions. but if the muffler is heated up (redline it a few times) it get's quite loud. furthermore, at wide open throttle, there is the distinctive magnaflow rumble.

i would definitely have a resonator in the system, but that's personal preference since i don't like my exhaust systems to be loud when cruising.

hope this helps a bit in your search for an exhaust, and good luck!

That was blunt... I know he has a b16

and I also know hes not turbo... 21/2 is still to big for a b16... ask any knowledgable exhaust specialest... as an exaple We took my buddies h22 lude, to about 6 diff places, everyone laughed when we asked for a price on 2 1/2 piping... We convinced one guy to do it after our eplination of the turbo sitting in his garage... theres no way a b16 n/a will need more than 2 1/4' ... hes hes gonna loose to much bottem end, a b16 is already touqueless so why hurt it any more... and I wouldnt be surprised if it sounded hollow and echoy...

pssst exhaust "specialists" are specialists at bending pipe... not engineers. There is much debate over the correct sizing, so I won't get into the particulars. I understand where you are coming from, but my philosophy is to help the engine shine where it was designed to shine - which is above 5500 rpm. Exhaust velocity also depends on the revolutions of the engine, not just displacement... think of it as a highway at rushour, ya know. I respect your opinion, and you are right in a way in terms of losing low end, but ultimately since he's already got a header to open up flow, there is no sense in plugging it up later down the line. Just my opinion

haha yah your probably right about the exhaust guys... but im sure they know more than we do...

hey, what happened to your good advice of picking a motor setup and sticking to it?? heh... if this advice were to apply (which it is probably the best words of advice I have taken since I became interested in building a motor setup, thank you) We should ask Konig what his intentions are for this motor... Then we can decide what to tell him... Because he wouldnt really be plugging anything up with a 21/4 na even more so a stockb16...

I think 21/4 will be the perfect compromise between top end and not loosing all of whats left the the bottem end... this is of course if his planns are n/a and not turbo down the road... just my humble opinion...

you are right tho, it is very debateable, now that he knows what each size does, and how and where diff sizing affects the torque curve, he can decide...

so konig, what are your intentions for this motor anyway? turbo, nitrous, lots of boltons??

Iam running a DNX (same company as dynomax) high flow cat with 2.5 piping to a staight through magnaflow exhaust...It isnt loud at all. I HAD a dynomax super turbo muffler with all stock piping and this setup isnt that much louder. BTW my piping has a resonator as well. While iam not in boost the exhuast will pop but when ever iam above 5K the sound is perfect... No problems highway driving.

ok this is a joek you will get maybe 1 hp in the upper part of the power band at a sacrifice of the rest of yoru power band...this is a joke you will gain basically nothign more only lose...and for a sohc I'd say 2 inch piping...
