Exhaust Patch

Hey, I have a hole in my exhaust 92 civic ( right before the muffler )

I have tried some patch products from crappy tire, but they only lasted a few days, I can't afford to replace the exhaust right now, can anyone suggest any way to patch it up for the winter, I have noticed signifigant gas milage loss since the hole and Its too loud to talk to someone while driving

thanks

Jay

if youre really desperate, take a coke can, slice the top and bottom off of it, slice it down one side and use two clamps to hold it in place.....this is only if you are really desperate....I assume no liability if it rattles in like a week

Its the curved pipe right at the muffler, he he the coke can is a good idea, but it is gonna sound like a rattle snake. I had a lightweight sheet of aluminum, but I couldnt seem to clamp it shut, so it rattled and leaked..... any prices for replacement, cheap?

Just go to an exhaust shop and tell them... look, I'm in school and have no money, so I just need a patch welded in place.... nothing fancy. They can do it in 15 minutes for $50 cash, and you're set for a little while. That's the axle back pipe BTW.

Grab a soup can that's about the same diameter as the pipe and use 2 wire clamps.

Should last a few months!

I picked up a Honda approved muffler for $93 plus tax from the dealer. So just leave the muffler the way it is and buy a brand new one that will last for a couple of years.

go to Speedy and ask them to weld it.....it'll take 5 minutes, and you'll be around $25-$30 poorer.....and if they can't weld it because the pipe is all rusty and fuqked up, they can cut out the section, and bolt in a replacemrnt one for around double the price.

haha, you kill me Im sure he can afford a 30$ weld job...

I must admit tho the soup can is very creative...

It would be a good fix for an old beater truck, but if i saw a soup can straped to a Honda, I would probably  not sure if it would be tears of laughter or sadness tho

the can would likely rattle after awhile tho...

exhast fumes my friend, that's why.

If they are escaping somewhere under the car, and you happen to have a hole that allows the fumes to enter the car, over time, you will start to get sick, and in the extrem case, die.

For the time and effort it takes to jack the car up.....install a half assed patch, (all while getting dirty in the process), why not just spend the $30 bucks or so, and get in welded?

Even if the patch works, the hole is STILL there.....which means it will eventually get bigger and bigger until the patch doesn't help/hold any more. When you weld the thing closed, you won't run into this problem later on. The weld is usually stonger than the pipe.

But off course, if you don't want to listen, then go ahead and use the patch.......but please don't come back here later complaining about the "rattle".

I took it to a local shop, $30 for the part + welding it on ~ but the rest of the exhaust has rust all along the bottom, so I guess i'll have to replace that in the spring ( hopfully the rust dont eat through over the winter)

I had this same problem last year.
I had it wielded at Speedy two times (for free because the geek manager was hot for my female cousin) ;-)
They only lasted 2 weeks each time. However, it bought me enough time to find an good axleback at a decent price from a TCC member.
