Post Exhaust Manifold - Please Explain

My Exhaust Manifold has been cracked on my 1998 Si for a while now. Its not too loud, but I've been driving it like that, I have a few questions:

Im getting different responses. Some people tell me just to keep on driving dont worry about it.

1) How much does a cracked manifold affect fuel consumption?

2) If I get a header, will my problem be solved? and is it worth it, cause in like a year or two Im doing a swap....hopefully

3) Somebody told me they can weld it, what about that?

4) Does the cracked manifold affect performance?

5) What about replacing it with a used manifold?...any used parts shop that u guys recommend?

Thanx for educating me

i cracked manifold will decrease low end power. it also is loud, noisy and annoying. but either than that there shouldnt be too big of an issue. There is a little bit more emissions... yes u can weild it back, but why bother. just go to the junk yard and yank out another manifold and pop it on. there is no sense getting a performance headder when u are swapping your engine. especially if they cost at least 250 bucks

If you can live with the nasty sound, ride it out until you get the swap. if you can't, I suggest you get it welded or get a used one off somebody (Classifieds forum). People throw away D series manifolds all the time as they aren't worth anything.

it's a manufacturer defect. they sent out a lettre a while back to ask civic owners to take their cars back for a new exhaust manifold. so the repair will prolly cost ya nothing.

I know the letter your talking about cause I also have a 1997 DX (my mom's car) my car is a 98 SI. I got the letter for the DX and assumed it also covered my car, but the dealer said no. I thought he was just being a *****, so I called Honda Canada, they said it doesnt cover your car....I'm still perplexed!

Has anybody got this repair done on an SI?

My mom's exhaust manifold is fine...Ill probably switch the manifolds then take in hercar, get the new manifold and then switch them back!

the exhaust manifold on your SI is different from the DX'. so problems caused by mistakes in the casting procedure of the DX exhaust manifold don't necessarily apply to your SI.

(oops, I've just noticed. Desispeed drives an SI )

If I switch the manifolds will the dealer realize?

Do the manifolds look the same?

I don't think there is any difference between the CX manifold and the Si manifold, as they both are D series engines and the Si isn't a great leap towards performance either other than the added bonus of VTEC (in terms of engine specs).

I think that there shouldn't be a problem with you switching it, and even if they do notice (which I doubt), just say you bought the car like that or something, like their going to know right

I doubt that they'd notice. I think that they look pretty much the same. Even aftermarket headers use the same parts for DX, EX and SI.

I'm pretty sure they'll notice, 'coz the DX manifold has a close-coupled cat and the SI's cat is at the bottom of the car.

That is correct! The cx/dx have the cat built into the e/m, whereas the si has the cat mounted under the Car.

So to answer your question yes they will notice as they are two entirely different manifolds
