Ever heard of struts going through the wheel well?

Someone told me about an incident where the strut went right through the part where is bolted down, I was wondering if this is possible? They told me its because car is lowered and the rough bumps cause it to go through.

Thanks

at my old work ( rona lansing ) we had this picture that one of the other store managers took and sent it out to everyone.....

it was a newer style jetta, and the frame was pretty much touching the ground.....and apparently the back shocks had come right through the floor......

why?

for god knows what reason the owner of the car attempted to tie down 30 sheets of 1/2 4x8 drywall on the roof, 20 bags of concrete in the trunk ( each weighing 30 kilos ) and rammed as many 2x4x8's in the car as he could, and drive away...... as soon as he put the car in gear SNAP

the weird part is....... the owner seemed to have some sort of respect for his ride because there were some bling chromies on it...

its one of those articles that makes you shake your head.....

ill try and get someone to send it to me and post it up

I could see if they were rusted out enough ...I mean through the strut towers.

A family friend apparently experienced such an incident with his 94-01 era Integra... his CV joint was well overdue for replacement and when it finally failed on the highway, well guess what came up through the stut tower?

Of course, I never saw it firsthand, so I don't even know if it's possible but that's what I was told.

if the person installing the struts forgets to put in the washers then the struts will go right through the hood

Yes, it is possible. Both from rust and from stress. Also, the washer as cosmic said...

I got a little story about the washers actaully, I bought this beautiful shape 2 door Jetta (very rare) but it kinda handled strangely and it had a bit of a rattle. So I got to working on the rear susp cuz I felt the problem was in the back... the shock rod was poking straight through the rear deck where the speakers mount, so the owner put a peice of 1/4 flat steel to keep it from coming up any further. I just took it all apart, went to this garage that specializes in VWs and bought the washers and stuff that was missing (plus I bought springs cuz both the back ones broke after I bought the car). Voila... like new!!!

While we're on this topic.. Isn't it true that if you put too much load on your shocks and go over many bumps ... you can pretty much destroy your shocks?

Yes...come by a meet & take a look at my hood.
Just remember if it happens to you - COMPLAIN and get them to fix the damages.

I've seen that happen to someone loading firewood into a Colt.

The wood guy warned him.

He said "Don't worry.

Couple more cords in the trunk.

Pop and whamo..

What a mess.
