Engine Wear from Winter Driving
So as I know a lot of people can't afford 2 cars (one to be driven in the winter and the other to be your "summer street car), I was wondering what kind of engine wear can be expected after a winter of driving that would significantly affect the performance/longevity of the engine? What can be done in the spring time to "heal" your baby/car?

If you want to avoid excessive wear on your engine in the winter get a black heater and plug in your car at night while it's sitting outside. If you have a place at work where you can do the same then you should be all set.
The most damage you do to an engine in the winter is start it up when it's cold outside. Having an engine block heater helps a lot. Trust me, I have one and it makes a big difference. |
I don't have an engine block heater, but I've got an oil pan heater and I use it when it gets below about -5. Also I'm noticing that my cold starts take a while to turn over; my battery is almost new so that's not the problem... could it be my starter??

try using a semi synthetic or full synthetic oil, it'll help alot. n use a 5w30 weight type of oil. there are also oil stabilizer that use can use with your normal oil to make it flow more freely during the winter cold months.

yea I'm already using Mobil1 5w30 to keep it as viscous as possible. I'm wondering if there would be much internal wear on parts (rings, pistons, etc.) after a harsh winter and would be worth replacing.

as long as you dont drive like an idiot untill it reaches operating temps. its fine.
I let my car warm up for 30sec then I take it real easy untill its up at O/T. I wouldn't recommend switching from regular to synthetic.. that won't really solve anything, imo. Unless if its a new engine. If your engine made it 100K+ with regular, keep on using it |
