engine tech

as some know i picked up a z6 bottom end last night... i wanna play with it... so i'm just wondering if there is a way to check weither the rings are pooched or anything i could check with the head off the engine??

the tops of the pistons have some carbon build up but nothing to excessive and the cylinder walls are all very smooth

not sure weither i'm gonna actually dis assemble the engine and perhaps build it up for when my kicks the bucket or not yet

pull it apart and check the "ring end gap" might aswell pull it apart and throw soem new rings in there then you will have a new bottom...jsut get the block honed...throw soem new rings in with new bearing and your good to go

you can poor oil over the pistons and see how fast it takes to go through the ring.but like dingus said just replace them.

well i started ripping the bad boy apart... everything is in excellent shape which is good...

the biggest shocker is how thin the connecting rods are... i think something a little more beefy will be required in the near future when that gets rebuilt....

B-Series rods can be made to go in the D-series bottom end. Or for a few hundred more you can get Eagle rods. Take it all apart, send it out for hot tanking when it gets back clean it up and oil the cylinder walls.

no, work needs to be done to fit it... there was an article on Honda-Acura but now it's down

check your PM

and yes, every engine-specific part has a marking cast right into it for identification... pistons, heads, rods, etc etc etc

hmmm i only see the 6 on the rods maybe i'm not looking hard enough cause it was just a quick look....

but anyways wouldn't i be better to just get some new eagle rods though? of course they would be more money but there also new and perhaps stronger??

depends on your budget... LS is cheap and works, Eagle is little more and works better. so you decide what you want. I remember it was $25USD / rod to mod them to fit the D-series.

i would feel better about putting for one new rods in and also something that was designed for where it is...

what about something silly like using a b16 crank ( i know it wont fit) and drop the stroke from 90 to 77... that would make a yummy screamer... go back to when civics had 1.3L engines too haha
