Exclamation Engine Swaps and Emissions Testing???

Hey Lads,
As you know I am getting an engine swap done. I was wondering how this will effect my emissions testing. I am due for one next year.

A few questions, Please only answer if you know FOR SURE:

1. Does the testing shop plug the car into the emission control computer as the body name or the engine name ie. If its a civic body with a b16a2 will the plug it in as a integra or civic.

2. Are engine swaps allowed due to emissions testing?

3. are the emission specs different from the stock Civic engine to a b16a2. I would imagine they are since the b16a2 is going to be older than the stock civic motor i own.

4. What issues will i have to cross come test time.

Thanks for the help guys.

PS- I forgot about the emissions *****!!!!!!

I can only speak for myself but heres what I experienced.

1. My car went in as a CRX (then again my engine was JDM) so I don't know what else it would be done as, but other rexers with b16 swaps also go in as CRX's and not Sols or Civic SiR's.

2. Swaps are allowed but from what I was told is that unless you get a higher or lower displacement engine you are tested with what the engine that came with the car is supposed to be. Example Civic Si with a b18c5 swap goes as a "hot rod" but a Civic Si with a b16a2 swap is still tested as if it was a Civic Si.

3. If you mean b16a1 (from a Sol) it should be close since its
OBD-1. but if you mean from a Civic SiR (its OBD-2) you should be fine. IF its JDM you're on your own (I don't know)
A safer bet would be to get a Canadian motor that way you know you're good to go (or should be)

4. Issues? Personally I had none. I had my swap done at Honda and they tested my car there. No problems at all.

Hope this helped a bit but I'm sure someone can help out a bit more.
Good luck.

Well for one, ive heard rumours that an older engine in your car is illigal.. as for emmisions, as long as you have a cat and a muffler, and the engine doesnt have anything wrong with it, ie running rich or something, then it should pass..

But i dont know forsure, because ive never had to do an emmision test cuz we dont have to do them in my area seems like I live so far up north eh... ? Im only an hour and a half from TO and no emmisions testing..

I got an answer from Drive Clean.....

I got an answer from Ontario Drive Clean today regarding my questions about emissions testing.

I asked them if changing my engine would effect my emissions testing. I got an answer somewhere along these lines.

They said I could try and get my car qualified as a "HOT ROD"
in order to have your car qualified as a "HOT ROD" you need a letter from a reputable mechanic preferably Honda stating that the engine in the vehicle was not a standard engine for that year nor was it offered as a standard engine for that year.

Easy enough eh......They stated if I get that letter then the car qualifies as a "HOT ROD" and the car gets tested according to 1980 emissions standards.

If it doesn't qualify as a "HOT ROD" then it gets tested as per the norm.

The above is only good for 1999 and older......

If you own a 2000 and up you are SCREWED. They will not allow a 2000 and up to qualify as a "HOT ROD" no matter what engine is in there. I am not to sure why they don't, they just don't.

So I hope a b16a2 in a 1997 Honda Civic Si qualifies as a "HOT ROD".

Does anyone know if the b16a2 was a stock or option for the honda civic in 1997. I don't beleive so.

b16a2 (from the SiR coupe right?)
Came in 99-00 on the SiR's.
I think think '94-97 it was in the Del Sol VTEC model as the b16a1(almost the same engine)

I did the emission last december. 92 civic si was tested as such (it is still a 1.6L vtec). I have a jdm b16a (selling the car, its in the classified section, so you can get a idea of whats done to the motor - everything but the headwork, intake manifold, and vtec controller was there when tested). Testing it as a hot rod would have helped. First time I failed (knew it would). After putting in the stock chip, a fuel pressure regulator, and squeezing in a stock d16 cat the car passed with the best numbers I have ever seen.

Next year will be a different story. Worst case, I will have to put the stock cams back in as the lower vtec cam is not as environmentally friendly as stock.

Yeah, I was under the impression that all of Ontario was included in the emissions testing now. I know that it used to be only certain areas but this is when they first introduced emissions testing.

I am pretty sure all of Ontario gets tested now.

What BoOsTZeX said is true in California, but I don't think it applies here in Ontario.
When my car failed emissions the 1st time (b4 I swaped) they didn't even ask about my engine. When I did emissions with the ZC having a swap wasn't an issue and since I did it at the local Honda dealer, I don't think that it applies to Ontario.
But I"m not sure. Good luck.
