engine problem
 

ok, here's the story.........i let my g/f drive the car around a residential neighbourhood so she could practice for her g2 test.........and suddenly the accelerator stopped working. there was no response when she stepped on it. so we pulled over, turned the engine off and tried to start it again. but it wouldn't start. so i went to the driver side and tried.....nothing.

i know it's not the battery b/c the sound system works and the head lights work too......and i also tried to boost it.

it's not the starter because i can hear it when i turn the key.

it can't be the gas b/c when i had it towed.....we put oil in it just incase i was out of gas and the sensor was wrong.

it's not the engine oil either casue i checked it with the dip stick.

i'm guessing it is the pump that pumps the oil to the engine...but i'm not sure. the car's in the shop right now but i'm still worried.....what do u guys think it is?

is the engine turning over, cuz if it is, maybe your fuel pump stopped working.

fuel pump or injectors or an eletrical prob. relating to fuel..

you put oil in your gas tank ??? thats what I get from your statement

it's not the oil pump as you suggest... as to what it IS... that's anyone's guess as the info you provide is pretty minimal. you haven't checked for spark or fuel... so it could be anything. It can also be that the throttle cable slipped off, and then you flooded it and that's why it won't start.

i mean gas, we put a can of gas in the car b4 towing it incase the sensors in my tank were giving me the wrong reading.

very minimal information. Check for the 2 obvious things first

spark....

fuel....

air....


if you go those the engine shoudl fire.

it could be a throttle body
as u said she stepped on it and nothing happend or it could be the cable from the peddle to the throttle body

k, it's the fuel pump.

but the mechanic wants to replace my timing belt too for some reason. that's alot of labour expense......he wants 800

Alot of the time when a mechanic recommends replacement of a part, it's preventative maintenance. As we see it, changing a timing belt is better than changing a motor. If you don't feel confortable with what he says, ask why he recommends that. If your gut says no, get another opinion, or wait till the belt snaps. Then you have a good reason to do something with the motor. Not all mechanics try to rip people off.
