Engine over heated because of no coolant. What has to be done?
So my friends 1.6 EL had no cooland in it, and the car over heated. He had to put bottled water in it every 15 minutes to bring it home.
So what has to be done now? Would filing it up with coolant mixture fix the issue, or do the water pump has to be changed along with the timing belt?
Thanks.

try puttin some coolant in it and "burping" it. I don't see why he would need to change the water pump, unless that is the reason for the lack of coolant.
My coolant was disappearing and i didn't know why, then i figured out that it was becuase the water pump was shot...so i changed it and voila no more disappearing coolant.
So i would suggest putting some coolant in, then checking to see if it disappears, if so, then the water pump may be faulty.

Depending on how bad his car overheated determines what needs to be done. Did his car get really overheated or did the water keep the temperature within the safety (non-H) zone? If it was well away from the "H" then he is probably okay with trying to diagnose the fault. Yes, it could be head gasket or thermostat or a shot engine block, cylinder head, radiator, heater core.... coolant goes through a lot of things...
If the engine has really been heated up, the cylinder heads could be warped or worse....It's hard to say. Best thing is to take it to a shop....this really can't be diagnosed over the internet...
