Engine Flush -- Proper way??
 

Hi guys, I'm wondering what is the proper way to flush an engine. I'm considering to do it myself, but I'm wondering if I take it to a place like Midas or something, would they do a better job than I do? It would be great if you could let me know what exactly is involved in a "routine" engine flush done by a mechanic out there. Thanks.

are you talking abou tengine oil flush??

basically just go to CT and pick up a bottle of engine flush.... then before your gonna do an oil change you pour it in and run your motor for 10 or 15 mins then just drain the oil and your done


if your talking about flushing your coolant i believe that is somewhat more complicated.... i vaguely remember it from highschool.... something with a hose and a special attachment.... not sure though

engine flush is a money grab... nowhere in your owners manual does it say to "flush" your engine. Most oils use detergents and whatnot in the base stock to keep sludge buildup down, but if you change your oil before it breaks down the sludge buildup should be minimal. A high concentration of additives and detergents in these enigne "flushes" is capable of attacking seals and gaskets, which is totally negative. If you've kept your engine in good shape with good quality oil, you should NOT have any issues.

some synthetic oils recommend flushing before switching from dino guts to synthetic though?? :crazy:

personally i never did i just threw it and was shocked how much it helped

Punk, I was referring to engine oil flush. Coolant / radiator flush shouldn't be too hard; one dude mentioned getting a Prestone flush kit that comes with instructions and an attachment for a garden hose.

what makes you think you need an engine flush anyways?

I wanna get a flush before I switch over to Amsoil/Motul/Redline oil for my next oil change. I got my car used at the end of last year with 170,000 km on it and I figure I'll do all the maintenance I could on it, including oil flush.

If you're swithcing to amsoil you need to get the amsoil engine flush. (far right)

coolant flushing/changing is easy too if u wanna do that. You can get a hayne's manual to explain everything in detail, but here's a short set of instructions (how i do it anyways):

#1 drain coolant from radiator
#2 leave drain plug off and run car with garden hose shooting water into where u put the coolant in at the top of the radiator
#3 put the drain plug back in...fill the radiator with some water and add the coolant flush...run the car for a good 15-20 mins
#4 drain the radiator again and run the car for 5 mins or so with the garden hose again.
#5 put the drain plug back in and fill'er up with coolant
#6 clean the coolant resevoir/overflow and fill it with the recommended amount of coolant

:nods: I see... ok, then if you got a car with an unknown history of oil changes... maybe it's a good idea.
