emission control light?

the yellow engine light went on in my car today, so I checked the manual and said there could be an emssion controls problem.

So, I read around a bit, and decided I would re-tighten my gas cap.

So if this stays on what should I do,..(I have an emission test to pass before September).

get the code read. Any shop can do this.

Was your gas cap loose? If it was disconnect the negative terminal for a few minutes for the ecu to reset. If the light doesnt come back.. nothing is wrong.

If it is an EVAP system error or leak, it may not come back right away, the ECM runs checks perdiodically not all the time

If it was the gas cap, as long as you re-tighten it properly, the light will go away after a day or two drive. It won't go away immediately.

My father's 2nd gen CRV somehow has a "2 stage" cap. What he though was tight was actually not tight, so the light would go on and I just tighten the cap again. The light usually goes away the second day after about 50km of driving.

If it stays on for a couple days, or a couple hundred km of driving, have the code checked.

ok i went to the mechanic and he checked the code,..said it was the crank sensor....so im glad it wasnt cat conv. as I've heard those are expensive as hell to replace.

so he told me a price..it was about 120 for labour ..he said it was about 3 hours work..and the sensor itself, he wasn't sure, but he thought around 100.

the car is ok to pass emissions but he said it would eventually die out.

edit: he also reset the light, so I am taking it back on tuesday.. I wonder if it will come back on.

just wondering is this something that happens to most civics/hondas or could this be something with the computer itself? I was talking to a couple of people at work and they said it could be the computer. Any thoughts?

Also, should I get this fixed if the engine light doesn't come back on?
