Dyno tuning, what is needed?
So if you go get your car dyno tuned, for an hour or so, do you need a stand alone ECU or a piggy back? I don't think so right?
I think they unplug your ECU, hook the harness onto their stand alone ECU and dyno tune the engine, then save the data, burn a chip and put it on your stock ECU, am I correct? Thanks |
is your ECU a virgin? If not it needs to be socketed, and they will most likely hook up a wide band o2 sensor and use crome or uberdata, save the file, burn the chip and insert it into your ecu.
|
My ECU is chipped, so all the work is done. I mean the car runs fine and I like it, but I don't know if the program was a result of dyno tuning, or whatever. Plus, I just wish to know what the base line is.
So it is like what I thought, thanks. |
ya, well they will run your car as it, with your computer. Then they will most likely pull it out and put in their own ecu they use to tune peoples car that has datalogging/real time programming capabilities. Then they'll tune away with their ecu and get the settings just right. Then they'll save the file and burn it to a chip and hopefully do another pull just to make sure everything stayed the same.
I've had it where the car runs leaner/richer after taking out the real time programmer and putting a chip with the same program on it into your ecu. I don't know what causes this, but i personally would do another pull with your chip in there to make sure everything is all good. Just so you know, the ecu they will use to tune your car with is the same as the one you will be using, just with datalogging/real time programming capabilities, which they can make your ecu have in like literally 10 minutes, but its just easier to use their ecu. Where you going for your tuning nova dust? |
hes going on the 401 with a laptop :D
|
hehe....i like going out to the sticks better, but doing 4th gear pulls is kinda scary, especially when you're tuning the 6000-8000rpm portion of the maps....hehe

This shop out in Whitby. I was there last year just for a dyno run, and I wouldn't mind do it again this year with the different setup. I am not sure how many power the dyno can squeeze out without making the car run too rich.
|
How much does this cost approx with an unchipped ECU? If the price is right I think I'll go for one.
|
Dyno tuning price varies from shop to shop.
|
usually $100 for 3 runns

^^^yup. If you want them to tune you're car you also have to rent their wideband o2 and pay them to tune it.
Nova Dust: I wouldn't be worried about them tuning your car and running too rich. Thats the whole point of tuning. If the engine is running too rich it won't make good power. Honda engines make power relatively lean. I mean my car has 11.5:1 CR and i run it as lean as 13.3:1 AFR at WOT. Which is pretty lean comparatively. |
zeeman you do tuning correct ? Have you ever tuned a b20 i would like to try you out and see what you can get from my car.
|
i will actually be tuning a b20vtec very very soon, as soon as i finish assembling it (20 minutes left) and get it in the car.
Paul from splitfire previously tuned your car right? Its probably tuned as good as it gets man. |
he did my tune but for some reason i have no idea why it seems like the tune is gone, it coulda been because i had to replace the seal around the vtec solonid but now my car runs rich again and vtec dont kick in till 6000rpms
|
changing the vtec solenoid seal shouldn't have affected your tune or switched the vtec crossover.
Go back to paul and tell him what happened. Don't pay someone else to tune your car. How do you know its running rich? Where did vtec kick in before? |
water out of the tailpipe
around 5200 rpms |
Damn, I almost forgot that Splitfire is in Brampton, what a convenience.
Anyone can give a rough quote of what Paul charges? And I heard he is an agressive tuner, or am I wrong? |
i honestly wouldn't recommend paul for anything....especially if you're not spending $10,000.
Plzbeleiveit: how much did it cost for paul to tune your car. Water out of the tailpipe doesn't mean anything. If it were black smoke out of the exhaust or the way your spark plugs look i would be concerned about running rich. Water gets trapped in the exhaust system and comes out when you rev your engine or go around a turn, no biggie, its better for it to come out than stay in your exhaust and start rotting. |
Damn eh?
