Downshifting to first

Question: Down shifting into first gear do any damage to tranny?

Does downshifting waste gas?

Ive been told by friends that down shifting into first when slowing down is bad. It will blow the tranny. (apparently)

What do you think?

I was always told the same thing, don't shift into first! Only cause the gear is so short that it is not needed??? So i don't!

See, the thing is, I downshift to first every time, every stop. I almost drive without using brakes. My clutch is fine, but, 2 years ago I blew the differential in the tranny. But at the heat of the moment, I wasnt downshifting, I was turning. Does downshifing to first gear make a tranny weak? Im wondering.....

That's a no-no. How do you think you bend your selection forks...you know how many ppl complain about gears being tough to get into...but everything seems fine (like the synchros are good, but it's still tough to find some gears) It's the selection forks that bend...

Selection forks? There are no forks in the tranny, two shafts slide back and forth to match gears...

The fork on the pressure plate would not bend.

I can't even shift into 1st w/out blipping the throttle and even then it's hard to engage.

But I'd say it's not good for the tranny overall.

Yea, i never downshift into first either. I just downshift into second, and then put into neutral and brake. Then i shift to first when stopped and am ready to go again.
But sometimes I shift into one while going really slow (on my driveway, or like someone said above, <5 km/h)

I think downshifting into first is bad.. at least i was told when my parents taught me how to drive standard.

the bottom line that i was told by my auto teacher who was a tranny expert is its ALWAYS cheaper to replace brakes than anything in the driveline - including clutches

If your looking for a reason to rebuild then keep downshifting into first
Apart from that you should never go into first while the car is rolling.

Woah good to know, cause I downshift into first once in awhile, but I'm almost at a complete standstill when I do it. Either way, I'm gonna stop it now. I also always put the car into neutral when I brake, that's better for the clutch and tranny isn't it? I'd rather wear out brakes then fix tranny parts...
