DOHC Vtec question

Is the vtec engagement in the 1st gen B16's generally not as loud as the 2nd gens?

I went for a run at WOT in 2 rice 4 U's car tonight, and his vtec is noticibly louder than mine. But I just came back from a spirited run in my civic, and seriously it pulls ******* hard (kinda even harder than his...), but when my vtec engages its not as loud as his. Don't get me wrong, its loud, but just not as loud as his.

Could it be the vtec sololoid? Cams? If its the soloniod, where do I get one for the 1st gen, because I heard its not compatible with the 2nd gens.

Also I'm trying to get ahold of Buddah's shop's info so I can make an appointment. I've heard he's one of the best and I have some mods/repairs to get done. It'll be worth the long drive.

Thanks,
Torrey

Its probably 2 rice 4 u's settings on his VAFC that make the difference when it comes to "sound" and performance.

how the motor is tuned can affect it greatly.

Where do I get a vtec solonoid for a 1st gen motor? I'm 99% sure thats the cause, because this morning on the way to work, I downshifted hard into 2nd to see if it would engage, it pulled hard, but didnt really sound like it engaged.

What should I do from here?

I don't think it is the solonoid. The solonoid is just a actuator to redirect oil to make the valve train switch over. Therefore, it is just a switch and if it is working, it is doing it's job.

Think of it this way. If you have a light and you turn it on, you use the switch. You can change the switch as many times as you want but the light will not get brighter. To get more light you need to change the bulb.

Long story short, I assume the added noise comes from the valve train and not the switch.

ps - you think that switch is loud on the road...try it in a closed room, under load on a dyno. When I dyno'd that motor I was with Jugglez and TO Tegs and when that thing switched over we all started freaking out...it was awesome.

Thanks Happy for the reply.

I'm going to do the usual, just changed oil but I will check its level, and I'll do plugs and wires this weekend.

Torrey

BTW Happy, you had a really REALLY nice car. I love that rear side speaker enclosure you made. And the fronts/rear GSR seats really compliment the black interior.

BTW steve, you left some tire marks on my road :P

The other thing that causes a louder sound can be bolt ons, I know I have 2 buddies both with 4th gen hatch's both with B16's and one's allot louder then the other. The louder one has all the basic bolt ons, intake/header/exhaust the quieter one doesn't have a header, so that also may be a factor.

Thats just my 2 cents
