Diy Engine Swaps

hey have any of you guys done engine swaps yourself? was it hard and alot of work and that tools did u use to left out the engine + tranny and was the wiring hard to do?

ROCKET VTEC 04-Apr-2005 06:27 PM

oh does anyone know how much a d16y8 engine+tranny weights waybe i can take it out with a help of a few ppl

cee_mon 04-Apr-2005 06:42 PM

Unless you are a women...then you and a friend should be able to lift a SOHC engine. Engine alone doesnt weight much more than say 120-140lbs iam guessing. I just know that i can almost life a SOHC by myself and i weight in at 140lbs. With tranny you should still be able to do it with 1 other guy, if not get 1 more. If 3 people cant lift it, you dont have a chance to get whatever project you were gonna do done.

ROCKET VTEC 04-Apr-2005 06:49 PM

lol im pretty shure 2ppl will be able to lift it if its that light, however do u need to get under the car to unscrew things to let the tranny and engine loose or it can all be done from the engine bay im pretty shure u will need to get inder the car to unscrew the tranny ... any thoughts?

zeeman 04-Apr-2005 06:58 PM

unscrew the tranny? lol
just have one of your friends lay under the engine bay while removing the mounts....lol....DON'T DO THIS!!!
You will however need a jack and a piece of wood to support the engine before removal.

ROCKET VTEC 04-Apr-2005 07:14 PM

lol how is the tranny secured to the car tho on a 96 civic or the whole of it is supported just by the engine mounts?

imported_Zyepher 04-Apr-2005 08:02 PM

Tranny mount*

ROCKET VTEC 04-Apr-2005 09:33 PM

whats the best way to lift up the car at home without it falling on your head

imported_nletourneau1 04-Apr-2005 09:38 PM

If you don't know how to lift a car properly, than changing an engine is not for you.

Play safe, not stupid.

imported_loudsubz 04-Apr-2005 09:49 PM

dont play games

some people just arnt meant to work on cars, don't take it as an insult

imported_ERTW 04-Apr-2005 09:50 PM

an alternate way to take the engine out is to remove your wheels, drop your car to the ground, undo the mounts and lift the car. leaving the engine on the floor.

i myself used an engine lift, it was really convinient

I usually just lift the car with my pinky finger and undo all the motor mounts with my other hand since I have JDM hands so they have like 400ft/lbs of torque on them, great for loosening surrborn bolts.

imported_InVaDeR_HB 05-Apr-2005 12:57 AM

^^^^^^^haha that was great!!!!!!! LMAO

f22-dohc 05-Apr-2005 02:21 AM

2x4's and a seatbealt a few jacks, tires or a lift makes this ish so much easier and oh, a few beers.

motor comes out in an hour if u know what ur doing.

your not gona learn how to do a swap on a web fourum... all the advice i can give you is get some books and start studying, make sure you have all the tools and resources you need before starting, an engine hoist would be helpfull.
