Diagnose this whistle sound
Hey guys, I heard a wierd whistle noise on my wife's 2001 Civic LX
this morning.
It lasts for only about one second.
The car is completely stock and it only happened as she released the brake and started moving.
I guess the best way to describe it might be to say it sounds like a person whistling.
Sometimes it's one short whistle, or two shorts whistles. It only happened about 3 times in heavy traffic this morning. And she recalls hearing it a couple times last summer too.
Can it be a brake pump? I don't know anything about brake pumps, but it only happens as she releases the brake.
Any ideas?

I have a 2002 Civic.. and I'll hear a short whistle early in the morning when my brakes are cold. As soon as they warm up, they're usually fine.
I found that it's usually cuz of the rain the night before or the morning dew that are on the brakes that cause the whistling.

Well could be one of a few things:
1) Rear brakes need to be cleaned and adjusted
2) After a rain fall while your car is parked, the front rotors sometimes form rust on the surface. When the brake pedal is released, the pad still rubs against the rotor thus rubbing up against the rust creating a squeal or whistling sound. Good thing is it's only momentary.
3) One caliper may be seized (worse case senario)
Hope that helps....
Cheers,
Buddah.
