dented header

i just dented my header tonight!v.v because of those stupid construction on highway 401 on the way from Ottawa! got a bump all of a sudden and dented my header
btw...is there any shop to fix that? like...pop it back out, i heard that i can high heat it and pop it back out...and does a dented header affact alot? the dent is about .5 inch inward...pain!v.v

RDub99 29-Oct-2005 01:07 PM

i dunno it you'd be able to pop it back out.. depends where it is I guess.. wouldn't you have to hammer it from the inside? might be tough..

chris_si98 29-Oct-2005 01:14 PM

I don't think it should affect your performance to where you would notice it while driving...

I may be wrong though.

Don't worry about it, trust me. My Rex's header had 2 or 3 dent's in it and I didn't notice any diff.

there should be a performance difference, but not if your engine is relatively stock!! it will restrict ehxaust flow, and create too much back pressure which could cuase loss of power and torque i believe!!

but its if just a straight b16 in which i thik you have, you relaly dont have a problem..

DefconDave 02-Nov-2005 01:27 PM

If you really wanna get picky, then I guess you would have to look where it is hit. If it's hit on the runner then the back pressure on one or two cylinders (4//1 or 4//2/1) would be different then the rest. If it's hit after the collector then at least the back pressure should be even.

Either way, I've seen it a million times and I really don't think it's a huge concern unless your running serious compression (12.5++) or the dent is that bad.

i wouldnt worry about it

LEITNER 02-Nov-2005 05:25 PM

yes, dents hurt performance period. this is something you cannot argue with. its up to you if you want to live with it. they hurt milage and cause unnessecary back pressure and so on. people usually dont care but honestly treat your car with love and fix it. would you drive around with oil that hasnt been changed in a year? little things are the cause of bigger problems.

no way to fix it really unless u get a new header, or take it to an exhaust shop that has a bender, and they'll use a sawsall to cut the section out, and weld a new one in, sure it might not look pretty, but neither did the dent

Bond CR250 05-Nov-2005 06:33 PM

actually there is a few easier ways to fix it, number one being to remove the header and drill a few small holes in the backside of the pipe opposite the dent, then using a small punch thru the hole and a hammer, punch the dent outwards, it may require heating of the dent to allow it to move, then weld up the small holes (1/4 of an inch at the most) or get a muffler shop to weld them up, shouldn't be very expensive to get done,

the other option is one that body shops use to pull dents in "blind" locations, which would also work on this application, where they use a "stud gun" or a weld pin gun, and weld 1/8th inch thick little pieces of rod into place in the dent and then using a slide hammer which clamps onto the rods they pull the dent, this method can also be used with the slide hammer by using small holes drilled in the dented piece and a screw in bit in the slide hammer, however i find pulling it that way tends to give the metal a "pimple' that u then have to hammer back in before you weld it up...

anyways, thats my suggestions, i'd personally use the top one, as its easiest and requires the least special tools which most people do not have

imported_Old_skool4g 06-Nov-2005 04:59 AM

i would just get a new header, unless were talkin about a 900 dollar spoon header.

speaking of which u should see my exhaust mani...haha man oh man, its almost flat

moral of the day kids.....being stupid low is, well, stupid
