D16y8

i have an EX D16y8, and i want to do a mini-me swap....im pretty muuch screwed out of that huh?? its easier to start out with the D16y7 non-vtec rite? so i would need to switch out the block?

1niceSi 20-Nov-2003 12:03 PM

i thought y8's were vtec engines???

if you have a y8 then your motor is already VTEC???

or am i misunderstanding your question?

imported_loudsubz 20-Nov-2003 12:12 PM

yes james is right

you need a y7 block or any other non vtec D block then slap your y8 or z6 head on it for mini me.

but if you get the d16y7 block that is 1.6 liters of displacement and you slap a y8 head on it ....then you'd have a d16y8... where's the MINI in that?????

a mini me consists of takeing a 1.5 liter block (like D15B7) and slapping a vtec head on it...

a mini me IS ALSO a y7 with y8 head as the combination is not the same as a Y8 stock.

how is the combination not the same you have 1.6 liters of displacement with vtec....

the only difference I've found (so far) is that the d16y7 has less compression I assume this is fixable with the y8 head....

the y8 and y7 heads come from the same casting the y8 though has the vtec stuff bored out.... from my browsing the bottom ends seem to be Identical so I don't see the point

punkindrublic 21-Nov-2003 07:24 PM

i believe the y8 has a better combustion chamber design...

imported_loudsubz 21-Nov-2003 08:39 PM

the best way to do it is get a d16a6 block and slap a vtec head on it, from my reading.

Blue Dream 22-Nov-2003 11:50 AM

the y8 head has a better combustion chamber yes,

the quench area is squared off, instead of the standard round design, makes for higher compression ratio, and less chance of detonation, higher atomization of fuel.

spracingsports 22-Nov-2003 11:48 PM

well an all stock mini me swap, y7 with y8 vtec head is said to make 120 hp. my y8 prolly only makes like 100-110, so there has to be a difference

SilverCRXSi 22-Nov-2003 11:57 PM

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the d16y8, the engine that came with the 6th gen Civic Si that gives 127HP.
Therfore you already have the d16y8 in your car and it would be pointless to swap the head.
The d16y7 makes for 106Hp (I think) and is the base engine.
Only thing to do would be swap in a b16 for 160hp.

Unless I am misunderstanding...

imported_EH_94_Civic 23-Nov-2003 12:04 AM

either way u have a VTEC engine now. why not trick out your bottom end a bit. put like 88-89 integra pistons and probably get a more aggresive cam. Probably be better bang for the buck

dingus8 23-Nov-2003 01:01 PM

he doesnt' have a vtec engine unless he swapped it....ek hatches did not come with SOCH vtec motor's tehy came with SOHc non vtec motors making 105 hp so go and slap a obd 2 sohc vtec head on it and then get a VAFc to tuen the fuel curve and vtec point for more hp......probobly cost abotu a 1000 to get it installed with the apexi vafc

SilverCRXSi 23-Nov-2003 05:35 PM

I think best thing to do is to have him say which engine he has, by checking out the engine code on the motor...
