d16y7? sohc and headers?

I have heard mixed things about throwing some headers on my y7. Everyone says I/H/E for all cars. Well, I have the intake and the cat-back exhaust, but I have no headers or high/flow cat...

first off, will it fit or do I have to upgrade my pipes?

second off, will it actually take away power overall? Its understandable maybe a little less low-end because it will be flowing pretty heavy, but what about top end?

"saving for my GSR swap!"

Then why bother spending money now on parts that you won't be able to re use later.

I don't think there is a header available for the Y7 motor because the cat is part of the OEM exhaust manifold. A Y8 header would probably work, but then you'd also need a new cat and midpipe.

An aftermarket header will work, you just have to put an aftermarket hi-flow cat after the header.

that's what i was thinking, if your saving for your GSR swap, dont' waste your money

If you're going with a GSR swap anyways, why waste money on I/H/E when you can put that towards the GSR swap fund?

You damn right! :p

you should build the bottom end first, then toss it out and get a swap.

Y8 exhaust manifold will do some tricks, but that's on a budget.

DC makes header for D16 engines. SMSP (one of the best custom header builder in the States, Dave I believe) just came out with a D16 header design. His B series headers is over 1000 USD so I think D series will be in the same area.

I dont get it, so the Y7 and Y8 have different exhaust systems?

imported_Solid Alibye 10-May-2005 08:38 PM

yup!

They Y7 has it's catalytic converter built into the exhaust manifold (header);

While the Y8 has it's catalytic converter under the car, and has the normal lookin exhaust manifold/front pipe (header) up front.

Hope that helps! :)

So can I use a Y8 header and cat on a Y7 engine?

Yes you can.
But your car won't have a cat on it however.
BTW I've got a y8 manifold for sale if interested.

imported_mikepasini 10-May-2005 09:42 PM

ok, so my understanding is that my stock exhaust manifold is integrated with my stock catalytic converter. Now, if I get headers and a hi-flo cat then I assume I am relocating my cat somewhere underneath the car. (btw... 96 hatch).

Will it stick out more (ground clearance is important as I have a lowered car of course.

bbarbulo 10-May-2005 10:34 PM

depends on what cat you get and who puts it in. some places will tuck it up nice and high out of the way. if I were you, I'd try to source the whole Y8 exhaust from the header back to the cat, then go aftermarket cat-back from there. that'll give you stock-like clearance under the car, and prolly be about the same price, but with quality OEM parts in the places where it counts.

well i have an Apex WS catback system already. I just want headers on my CX. So I have nothing to choose from?

imported_GoldBadge 12-May-2005 09:06 AM

I have a World Sport and it's for a Y8 engine. I have headers and a high flow cat and then the cat-back. It fits, but the guy who installed it said it was a b!tch to do. I will be reinstalling these parts on my new car myself, so I'll tell you how easily they go together when I do so.

But the way I see it is: If the header is for a Y8, the Cat is for a Y8, and the Cat-Back is for a Y8 then, when combined, they will fit any 96-00 Honda Civic coupe or Sedan.

EDIT: You have a snatchback, so I don't know how valid my points are. Hatchback chassis are shorter. If your Apex'i exhaust is for a hatchback, then I think you may have problems with the length of the mid pipe when you go to install the headers and cat.

Oh, and I hit quote instead of edit by accident.
