Question D15b Swap

Hey guys,

So in two weeks my d15b swap will be complete, I know its a very modest swap to have done, but at this point my eg hatch is just a daily driver. But I CAN'T wait to get the busted *** d16z6 outa there though, its got almost 270k on it and has been driven hard by its last owner.

My question is really an open forum for discussion and personal opinion ( thats a given considering the nature of TCC ).

The year end goal isn't naturally aspirated, and I have done my research on what I can expect in terms of whp with this setup. But I wanted to know if there are any other members out there that have had experience with this set-up and what your projects have turned out like.

I'll post pics when the install is complete ( because I KNOW everyone is dying to see another d15b haha).

D15b 130hp@6800

vs

d16z6 125hp@6600

honda swap

Not a bad engine. The extra HP is more noticable going from a d15b2 to well anything, zc, d15b, b16a.

oops didn't notice the boosted part.

If you build & tune it right should be a decent performer.

If its a strong motor and you got the D15b SI model (there is also a lower hp one...hopefully you didnt get that) we have seen on the dyno anywhere from 110-120 to the wheels.

We have one customer who put down 150whp with bolt ons and some light head work, plus tuning by Nick (Teknotik) which is very strong for a D series (when you think a b16 stock will put down 135ish).

Hey Eric!

It was funny that you posted on this thread, as we have done business in the past. Last year around this time I was bugging you to try and find me the mystical LSD for this motor, haha.

After alot of research I have realized that even in finding the lsd it is going to have already taken the toll of time. I am considering one day the Quaife, but for cost, I may just end up with a diff motor at that point.

BTW, its Trevor....... go CAI. hahaha

Oh yea, its Justin at Intense Motorsports doing this work for me. It looks like he will have the capability to do some tuning for me there now, but worst case scenario how much (ball park) would I be looking at for having the tuning done from you?

Justin put my d15b in, he doesn't do much tuning there, maybe Sean might be able to ship your ecu, but as far as custom tuning I know he doesn't do it. if you decide not to boost, look into the akmee valvetrain and camshaft, guys on d-series.org are making 138 whp on a z6 without the head being taken off. Boosting should obviously yield higher numbers though.

www.d-series.org is the best place to do your research.. that's where I started when I wanted to build my D. The only downfall is you have to get some headwork done.. which will cost some money.. but besides that, it's quite possible to be up by 150-160whp

Just did one in a friend's car..

After doing H22 civic swaps, his was like doing an oil change.. hahah Everything is literally plug an play in a civic Si.

Just need to use an D15B downpipe and if u are using a P28, a 4 wire O2.

150whp with just bolt ons and headwork? what kind of bolt ons were these? i'd love to get some of that stuff. 150whp with MINOR headwork and bolt ons is impossible. assuming by bolt ons you mean i/h/e and not a cam or anything. 99% of the graphs i've seen that eclipse that mark had some bottom end work done.

keep your d16z6 after you swap in the d15b. build the z6 while your boosting the d15b. turbod16.com is a great source for turbo info on your d. akmee actually broke into the 140whp mark with their cam shaft. i'd like to buy a set from them but i wonder how well they will be with boost. i plan to stay NA this year and go boost the next. as for the lsd, you can get an obx lsd for 350usd or so on ebay. it's an exact replica of the quaife. at first they had issued with axles not being able to take back out but it seems like they've solved that issue. if you buy it, just be sure to re torque everything down just to be safe. either way you're paying half the price of a quaife. there are people with boosted d's running them on the strip with no problems at all.

Thanks for all of the advice guys, I may end up being a test pilot on the obx lsd later on this year. Probably give it a try before I drop the boosted z6 back in next summer.

Where would you suggest having the headwork done?

let me know when you test out the obx. i plan to get one myself. basically i was in the same situation as you except i swapped out my d15b7 for a mint d16z6 but after thinking about it, i'm going to buy another z6 block during the summer and build it until next summer. i've seen motex work and it's pretty good. his name is bill and his shop is located in etobicoke. i don't know the prices in other places but to do a proper head job he quoted me 1000 bucks for my d16z6! i wanted to do it to my engine now but i don't want to spend so much on my stock motor atm so i'll just do it later down the road. if you do plan to go the boost route, don't spend too much time with NA mods because it'll just be wasted. i/h/e in a cx will be quite peppy.

I will keep everyone posted on the progress of this setup, the obx lsd could be interesting, especially in a solo II car.

The D15b goes in this Friday,......... WOOOO HOOOO!! I can't wait to get that durrrrtay z6 out of there.

The quote you got on headwork sounds about right, I just talked to my mechanic and one of his customers had it done and it ran him about the same. Hope that after all that work he has a nice safe garage to put it in! I got my S**T jacked in the middle of the day in an extremely visible spot at a super packed office last month!!!! While i was at work!!! DAMN VIKINGS!
