d15 vtec in an ek hatch??

Anyone have or know anyone who has a d15 VTEC in an EK?? I'm wondering what it feels like, and if its worth the effort over the stock d16 non vtec. Thanks for the feedback, this may help me make my desicion.

Younes Si 09-Oct-2005 04:02 PM

I'm not sure about that, but I do know that it's nothing special at all and you wont feel the VTEC

If you have D-Series engine you wont feel VTEC

sohcnotec 09-Oct-2005 04:35 PM

It's going into your EL?
Save your money, in a heavy EK it won't be much if any diff over your stock 1.6

ELGUY 09-Oct-2005 09:52 PM

actually my login name is missleading. Im driving my wifes 96 hatchback. That will be the car i'd be putting the d15 vtec in.

Should have read the title of the post.
Anyhow, save your money.

First of all the hatch is not v tec unless you have already done the swap, I did that exact coversion in my 96 a few years ago also I put an si tranny and the car was as fast as a gsr. I know that this post will be dogged but the car was faster than I thought. it was alot of effort and money but worth it. Remember the d15 is an obd1 engine and you have to convert yours to that

Maybe I'm reading this wrong. You are saying a d15 is faster than a b18c1? Was your D stock? I seriously doubt it was faster than a b18c1.

bronx 10-Oct-2005 06:29 PM

its not worth the effort to spend 1000 in order to gain 20hp

buy a crv motor and put it into your ek hatch.....you will feel a very big difference....crv motors go for about 1200,
while d15b goes foraround 400

He said Si tranny, 4.25FD plus a lighter car, lighter engine and assume a better driving skill, what he said could be done.

To the original poster, no need to go D15 VTEC imo. Keep your D16, and get a Y8 transmission with a short final drive. Won't be cheap, but the result will be very different.

scott newman 10-Oct-2005 10:11 PM

The car was faster than the integra, have you ever really driven a gsr?? they arent really that fast, the civic with that engine ok faster car, the integra really isnt that much to sneeze at. I had an sir that stock would beat easily a gsr, the engine was pretty much stock the only thing different was I freshened it up and did a really good valve job, the stock specs but a good machine makes the difference. Now the one that i raced a few times I didnt know the person, and I don t know how good a driver. IMO good swap, not worth the money if you have to pay someone to do it. I did it all myself so not too much, I think the whole thing cost me somthing like 700$ or so. I had an si tranny already.

imported2nv 10-Oct-2005 10:22 PM

if you are looking for a cheaper swap buy and obd1 zc and put a little work into the head port polish and make sure you get the zc tranny nice gearing.
other wise just put a vtec head on your block(mini me) maybe swap the tranny to an si like newman said.
and you will feel the gains
otherwise you are looking at 3000-6000 for any other swap(B-series)
if you need help deciding im always open to giving info pm me.

Damm i love genius posts like this, yes u can buy a b20 for about 1000, then u still need a tranny, [;us all the other parts needed for the bseries, after your done your easily looking at 2000.

Keep your stock motor, get the si trranny , do a mini me or turbo the damm thing .

I had the d15b vtec in my 93 4 door, and it was a blast over the stock motor.

bronx 10-Oct-2005 10:57 PM

yeah thats true.....but at least u got something with lots of torque and a big big difference when driving

b series does cost after everything is paid for....

i dropped a d15b into mine couple weeks ago into my eg coupe. it is pretty quick for a 1.5 and for whoever says you cant hear the vtec on it, i sure can just take a look at the size of the vtec lobes compared to a y8 or z6. much longer and aggressive. the motor sounds like a dohc when your in vtec. sounds really good and i still get good gas mileage. but since its an ek id say stick woth ur gen motor and drop a y8 in if your lookin for sohc vtec.

zeeman 11-Oct-2005 09:20 AM

no one ever has faith in the d-series. I say if your on a tight budget go with a d-series. But yes a b20 would be killer in an EK hatch and a straight forward swap too. But it will be a lot more expensive than a d-series swap. B20 longblocks can be had for about $800 and under from what i've found. But you're still left with a long list of parts to change when going b-series.

Nova_Dust 11-Oct-2005 09:33 AM

The drive shafts, tranny, shift linkage, ECU, rear tranny bracket, and wiring harness are just some of the parts to mind. Then there are also radiator/radiator hoses, mid-pipe modification.

Again, swap parts add up quick. A 1500 job will end up be close to 2300 if not more, then you factor in labour.

Good luck.

zeeman 11-Oct-2005 12:10 PM

oh for sure. The cheapest (realistically) b-series swap will cost at least $3000 to be done right (right mounts, axles, linkages, changing timing belt/water pump and clutch) and thats not including labour.
Like Nova Dust said, swaps nickel and dime you to death. Ask anybody who's done one before, especially doing the labour yourself. Stuff breaks and you forget or don't know that you need something until you come across it.
But for the money i'd go with a d15b or d16y8 for sure.
And it will be as fast as a gsr like scott newman said. You have to remember GSR's are heavy cars, especially compared to an EK hatch. He didn't mean it would be as fast as if it had a b18c1 swap done to it.

sorry, that was just funny

It is best if you have 4K cash and you are looking for something simplier, like a stock B18B swap so you can spend the money on parts more easily as oppose to limit yourself even before you start buying the engine and whatnot. And if you have money left, great. If you use all 4K, as least you are prepared for it.

When it comes to swaps, there is no hurry. New stuff will always turn up from wracked cars and those who have built engines who decide to go a different route or go back to stock will have their parts for sale at a decent price. It saves you time to build one, too.

Always look for deals.
