cx motor swap....what needs to change??
 

Hey, i've got a stock cx engine that i'm upgrading to the d16y8...( i got a parts car for cheap and i'd like the VTEC)...

The parts car is complete so i just need to know what i need to transfer over, and what i can keep on....

obviously the ECU....

wiring harness?....

mounts?...

the D platform must be the easiest swap...

any input or opinions on what i'm doing would be helpful too....maybe some tips....

you can even reuse your stock cx harness and wire the vtec straight into the ecu, that's what i did. or you can just get the harness and ecu and your set. you can reuse everything else. i got my swap done in 2 hours.

that's nuts..... i thought it would take a weekend at least.....

ok maybe an extra hour at most wiring vtec up and filling motor back up with coolant and stuff. my boss was helping me so everything went much faster. it's honestly a simple swap.

Hey, sorry to keep digging into this topic......but a friend of mine made me realize something....

the only real difference between the two engines is the top half.... so why would i swap the whole thing when i can just swap the intake mani and wire the vtec into the ecu..... isn't that called a mini me swap or something??

has anyone done this and had problems??

should i replace all the gaskets when i do this??

well the bottom half refers to the block, meaning to complete a mini-me you would have to swap the cylinder head not just the intake manifold... secondly the bottom end is not the same, they're similar but not the same. Swapping heads is will take near the same amount of time as swapping the complete engine. If you have the whole engine, put it in. If you don't, you should have your y8 head milled just to make it true again if it's warped at all, buy a head gasket and new head studs.

if you already have the engine its better to just put that in, its not too good to open up a motor unless you really need or want to..

i agree, plus its .1L bigger. The stock d15b7 non vtec is a decent engine, but the d16y8 sohc vtec is a great engine. Also i would recommend using the d16y8's tranny too, its got shorter gears and will help with accelereation.

I think the stock engine is an d16y7, cuz it's ek we're talking about, but still the bottom end is not exactly the same. I agree with Zeeman though definitely use the si transmission... you'll probably notice more of a difference from that than the motor.

his car has a d16y7 not a d15b7.

personally i would swap the entire motor saves alot of headaches.

and i wouldnt wire vtec in i would just replace the entire harness *its a cleaner job and its guranteed to work without trouble shooting*

the only thing you have to do is

pull the motor and tranny and ecu and harness thats it everything else can be used back from the old setup.

yeah, ur right. For whatever reason i was thinking we're talking about an EG.
The EK si tranny is even better b/c it uses the good shift fork.

...whole motor it is..... but the si tranny is toast, no 2 or 3rd.... i was just going to bolt it up to my stock tranny... wont all D series engines bolt up to D series trannys?

if not it's gonna cost me a couple bucks to get the si tranny fixed up...

yes you can re-use your tranny. Check the clutch/pressure plate/release bearing while its off, no better time to change it if need be.

you can reuse the tranny but it's hella long compared to the si tranny. the difference won't be as big if you reuse your stock tranny.
