Crower D17a2 aftermarket cam
 

Hi,

Does anyone have any experience with Crower cams for the D17a2 engine? I'm thinking now with my warrenty is up I wouldn't mind a little more pep in the upper mid-range and up region. It seems like the D17A2 is low on the list for any aftermarket support.

Now do you have any dyno graphs or any reports regarding that claim?????

I was thinking either part # 63641 Stage 1 or depending the how the idle is on part # 63642 Stage 2 NA 3/4 Race. I know with the stage 2 I will have to upgrade the springs, etc., I wished I could find some dyno graphs and maybe a video of these cams in action. I'm not going to turbo my civic. I just want a little more pickup in the upper rpm band.

cam upgrades are almost entirely pointless unless you have a large budget or do the work yourself. You will need to tune the engine with a dyno, and have the entire motor ported, and polished. If the motor doesn't flow, it isn't gonna make more power with an aggressive cam. I've done lots of research on this for my D15B, and realized the costs are pretty high. For a D17, i don't even know whats available...

For the price, get a B swap (B18, B20).

If you want more pickup, a bigger motor is your best option. If you want to be faster around a race track, seat time is your only option.

Thanks for the info however I can tell you right now some POS B series engine won't be going into my 05 Honda Civic. I would be going the K series route instead. However this car is my DD and right now I don't want the K series swap down time.

My main plan for the engine was to get hopefully do a stage 2 cam & spring and maybe an after market intake manifold. I basically want it when you open the hood that the engine looks stock.

Now that you got me thinking on a port and polish just makes me want to get a used D17A2 head and do it up. Why not? I'm not in a huge rush and I really don't have a budget I'm stuck to. I know a cam & springs are going to be around $700US. I don't even know what a head would set me back (Haven't researched it yet).

BTW: As of right now Crower is the only company I can find that makes an aftermarket cam for the D17A2 (not A1).

If you are going to be building a d17 head, I'll suggest something you may wish to look into, and that would be to use a d16y8 Intake Manifold on the D17 head. It requires a little bit of work, but there are DIY articles on the topic, and its a great way to eliminate a weak point on the D17. You can also spring for an aftermarket D16Y8 manifold such as the Blox which we carry.

If you buy a different head to do the work, you can get most of the work done while still having use of the car. If that is an option for you, do it up. Here is a thread i had to read to get info on D cam options and requirements:

Some people have had issues with upgraded cams producing LESS power as a result of not following the suggestions of people who had experience.

All that said, i still think your costs will be $2000-3000 for the full job (including parts and tuning).

I think getting another head, and do it up right the first time would be the correct way to do it. Now only if I can find some dyno graphs of the stage 1 or stage 2. Plus I want to hear the idle of the stage 2, hopefully it's close to stock sound.
