could u?

this maybe a stupid question, but would it be possible to go to the junkyard get a turbo off an audi or something and craft it on to a civic?

imported_2join performance 19-Sep-2006 08:21 AM

Yes. That is the whole idea behind home made turbo setups. All you need is a manifold (custom, or something like the std or hx manifold), and an adapter plate for that turbo.
And its not a stupid question, or else there would not be an entire site devoted to home made turbo setups: homemadeturbo.com
:)

Nova_Dust 19-Sep-2006 08:46 AM

Yes it would work.

I'm sure that this car can make power, and make full use of this setup.... BUT THAT IS SOOOOO GHEY!:marchmell

and to answer the question, Yes it is possile. You can put on any turbo of any car onto your car, just make sure you have all the other parts ready (those you can't really take of another car). And make sure its properly tuned.

LOL.....explain your opinion?

Removed the head light cause the turbo was getting really hot, cut the hole in the hood cause it wouldn't fit on right with that turbo....and it lets the turbo suck in fresh air....

Honestly I don't care what the heck it looks like cause it just has to go fast....thats it.

And that was the easiest way to get the exhaust out.....trust me.:naughty:

......she placed 7th out of about 40 cars at this years j-body bash...

imported_ITK 19-Sep-2006 03:00 PM

oh no I know! that's why I stated that it probably makes good power.
Everyone has thier own taste and opinions on how thier car should look.
Personaly I would not do something like that to a car.
But you do have to agree that the exhaust pipe sticking out from under the bumper looks funny.
BTW how much power are you making?
I know a few guys from J-body....don't remember thier board names...or real ones.....

The truth is i have no idea how much power it's making....

We used a Gtech pro once on it while running 4-5psi boost, and the torque curve was off the chart....coming down from 190+ at a 45 degree angle from 3900rpm up to 5200....so I'm guessing it was up in the neighbourhood of 240-250 wtq at lower rpms, at only 5psi boost....

hp was only about 150 @ the wheels.....but it dyno'd 120whp and 160wtq when it was natrually aspirated...

So basically....it's making rediculous amounts of torque...lol

It's a hand-full going down the track...:D

As for looks....it wasn't exactly a show-stopper to begin with...lol.
If the body was in better shape I would have done a hood scoop or something instead of just a hole...The exhaust is out there cause it was easy....off the downpipe, out the side....why make it snake all the way to the back when there is no room?.....You've seen the all motor front wheel drive drag cars etc.....their exhaust is the same...

It was a fun project to build and i'm still tweaking it....gonna be going to a smaller turbo that will spool quicker for next year

zeeman 19-Sep-2006 05:54 PM

you can't use just ANY turbo. You have to make sure that it will work with your setup. Like, you can't have one that has the compressor outlet facing the engine b/c it will be impossible to make charge pipes for it. Or you wouldn't want to use huge turbo on a single cam.
But yes, home made setups can make decent power, provided you have the proper components and good tuning.

well.. you could always clock it

dingus888 19-Sep-2006 06:27 PM

^^^ ding ding ding

just use any small gas engine turbo

stay away form huge deisel turbos with massive exhaust housings etc

VTEC_Thunder 20-Sep-2006 09:19 AM

For a d16....a garret t28 or most t3 sized turbos will work fine...(like a dsm turbo (eclipse, talon etc...))

^^And your right, diesel turbos do not work well on gas engines...

imported_2join performance 20-Sep-2006 10:45 AM

The gt28r, and t3 48/60 compressor maps suit the d16's very well if your looking for a good mid to high rpm power band.

Not if its internally gated (like most factory turbos are) b/c the wastegate actuator rod will limit the amount you can clock the turbo....come on chris....you know this.

And holy charge pipes on that cavy.

Ya like that eh.... LOL:D

I was limited on routing the pipes cause there ain't much room under the hood with that big motor shoe-horned in there...lol.

Exhaust piping and rad hose with hose clamps FTW!!!

(only blown a hose off once!lol)
