cold start rattle?

Basically, the last two days, when i get out to work at 5:30 am, I noticed a 'cold rattle' coming from the engine. It lasts a couple of seconds. I shifted from 1st to 2nd, still hear it, then its gone.

I start the car mid-day,(any non cold weather) and the car is not making any noises it shouldnt.

Anyone know what the problem could be?

check for an exhaust rattle

could be cat heat shield.

ok now it happens regardless of the weather but only when i turn on the car. It goes away after a couple of seconds.

I don't know why it would only happen after turning on the car..the exhaust doesn't rattle.but i will have to check this with a buddy to reproduce the sound.

I can almost guarantee you its the exhaust.. is it like a metal on metal high pitch sound? Or more of a low rattle/knocking?

imported_globalc 25-Sep-2007 07:50 PM

its more of a mettalic kind of sound..hard to describe with words...i think your right too. the pitch matches the revs...

imported_chris_v2 25-Sep-2007 08:38 PM

yeah its a heatshield

imported_globalc 25-Sep-2007 09:28 PM

so whats the next step bud :P

imported_BoostedEh2 25-Sep-2007 09:31 PM

if its the heat shield...and its corroded where the bolts hold it up...take it off...you dont NEED it

worse case..by a new one if you really want it there
