Coilovers?

I have a few questions about coilovers. For people that have been using them and are using them:

1. Will coilover sleeves (not the full coilover system( ex: tein)) seize up in the spring after using them in winter conditions at stock height?

2. Cost for install of coilover sleeves?

3. How long can you ride on stock shocks with coilover sleeves? At a 2" drop for example.

4. Is it better to buy aftermarket shocks when you get coilover sleeves, or is it possible to wait till your stock shocks give up?

Thanks in advance

IMHO, if your goonna go the coilover route, do it once, do it right

its your suspension you're messing with......get the whole kit

best bet is to read about different types of CO's, and expereince them first hand before deciding

I've redone my susp 3 time cuz I didn't do it right each previous time. Don't do coilover sleeves, I had the best out there (Ground Control), and they do nothing to compare to the H&Rs I have now, and even now I'm dreaming of JIC Magic. So do it right the first time...do the shocks and springs together. Don't do coilover sleeves....either shocks/springs, or coilovers.

I have Skunk2 Coilovers...bought em last June. Dropped my car 3 inches...all shocks are almost dead...cost was $100 to install. They are in perfect condition thus far through the winter...I was told to spray Anti-Seize on them every few months.

Soon I'll have those KYBs to go with them...itll be a nice ride.

BUTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT - IF I COULD DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN>>> ID BUY FULL COILOVERS!!!!!!!!! I think you should do that...

cause Ive spent
$350 for coilovers
$100 to install them
$600 for shocks
$100 to install them

$1150!!! for just a couple hundred more you can get a full coilover......

buy my Skunk2 coilovers if you dont want FULL coilovers

$350 is real cheap...I paid close to $550 for my Ground Control coilovers. Considering just Eibach spring sell for $400, I thought it was a good deal, and it was at the time. But my tastes grew up...

i got my coils and i am satisfied with them, it all depends on how low you wanna go. if you wanna be exceptionally low go coils, if you have the money get the full system.

I've had my coilovers on since July and it is my opinion that these things are not worth the money when for a few hundred more you can have springs. I find the ride to be bouncy as well as noisy. I will be upgrading my suspension once again this spring!

You should just buy springs that give you the drop you're looking for!

The only thing about getting springs is that , the car has to be winter driveable. I don't want to go through a hundred different suspension setups. THat's alot of $. What's the better setup?
Tein system- does it come with shocks?

Tein full system v.s. ground control coils and kyb agx adjustable shocks

Greencivic/bbarbulo- Do you have aftermarket shocks on your car? How's the ride quality?

I was dropped just under 2" and found I had the plow effect a little too much so I raised it up 3/4". Since I only want a 1.8"drop springs are what I need, you may want to go lower thus coilovers might be better suited for you. If I were to get coilvers again I'd get the full adjustable set which run for about $1500 where the sleeve is built onto the shock!

Joker, I have H&R coilovers...full deal. Before this I had stock shocks with Ground Control, and that was okay. Before that I had Suspesnion Techniques springs on stock shocks...that was a bit too low and a bit too bouncy.

I noticed something....everyone that posted, left out some important info....ie..... how low did YOU drop it......are you still using the stock struts.......size of tire/rim. With out all this info, it's like comparing apples to oranges.

4. Is it better to buy aftermarket shocks when you get coilover sleeves, or is it possible to wait till your stock shocks give up?
ok.....

1. they won't seize up as long as you maintain them....lubercate/coat them.

2. expect to pay between 1-2 hours for the labour.

3. depends on the road conditions and your driving habits. If you keep it under a 2" drop, it's like having 4 people in your car all the time. the stock stuts can handle this load, ....so I would say awhile.

4. Depends....if your stocks are still in good condition, leave them alone. When you start to notice that your car is getting really bouncy, start saving for new performance struts.

As for the comment of "why do it twice"....once you have coilovers installed, you can easily do the shocks by yourself WITHOUT a spring compressor......so you wouldn't have to pay for the install again.

my car......16" rims....205/40/16.....Suspension Tecniques springs. (around a 1.5-1.8 drop...front-->rear). Stock struts.

Springs came on the car when bought it.......going on 2 years....don't know how long the previous owner had them on.........everything is still fine.

Get the coilovers......they go for around $115 with tax. You can get them installed for under $150.

I've had my coilovers on since July and it is my opinion that these things are not worth the money when for a few hundred more you can have springs. I find the ride to be bouncy as well as noisy.
Noisy? You do know that you have to mantain them....right?.......chech them everyonce and awhile to make sure that set screws haven't loosened up........also see if the person that installed them used ALL the rubber O rings that came with them........biggest reason why they become noisy.

You car is probably bouncy because your struts are gone.......struts in good condition won't bounce.

When you get them replaced,... see if when you push them down, if they come back up by themselves. Bet ya they won't.

Alan I did the install and used all o-ring's as well as set screws. Brand new shocks were installed at the same time, the only reason I bought these coilovers was cause it was cheap and couldn't afford good stuff. Now that I make half decent money I don't think I would ever go with a sleeve kit again. It is not much more to go with a good set of Koni or Tokico coilover's.

Just my $0.02

A full coilover system can go for between $2000-$5000 installed. Look at it this way...springs cost $400 for a decent set. Coilovers are springs and sleeves...so how do you expect to get decent quality coilovers for $150??? Would it not make sense to have to pay more than $400 for springs+sleeves? By the time you toss shocks in...that's another $1000, so you are already looking at $1500+, so for a few hundred/thousand more, you can have full coilovers. Progress Competition are about $1200USD, and they are pretty much entry level, but very good quality. Personally, I don't think you can beat a Koni/Eibach combination or Koni/Progress (shocks/springs). 1.8-2" drop between the two springs, and wicked control. By the way, most of the winter, it's just wet and cold and salty....rarely do I ever encounter deep snow where a low car might get stuck...I don't think it's worth compromising quality and ride just to have adjustablity. Unless you are ready to go to full coilovers in 6 months, don't get cheap sleeves now, you'll regret it big time.
