WD40 really isn't a lubricant.....you should just try spraying a light lubricant in there, there should be a pivot point....

try lubin the master slave cylinder behind the pedal or just do what you were gonna do and listen for it in the engine bay and see if at all something needs lubin

its the clutch slave cylinder

use lithium grease
or even better use high temp/high pressure grease, won't break down as quickly

2 more things

1.) post in the right forum
2.) use the search, this has been covered quite a few times

look here yo

That was one of my old threads. The same thing is starting to happen with my 03 now. On my 98 which I originally had the problem with, I got into the habit of applying some lube with every oil change.

I have that problem occassionally too (1996 hatch), lubing it didn't help for me though, not sure why but still seemed to come and go just as before.

Here is another thread about it too:

Some people in other threads said to just get lithium grease spray and spray it into the hole into the tranny. I really don't think that's the best idea because you don't want to spray into a hole where you can't really see inside and possibly get grease onto other transmission components. What I did was pull the rubber boot back covering the clutch slave cylinder exposing the hole into the tranny. There is a clutch fork directly inside the hole that you can feel. There is a clip somewhere in there on the clutch fork that I needs to be unclipped from the fork carefully using something like a screw driver. There is tension on this clip so it could spring apart when you unclip it. You must be careful to not drop the clip into the tranny or else it's gone and to get it out you would probably have to take the tranny out. But once the clip is loose the fork can move easily and there is a ball and cup kind of object at the end of the fork. You must move the clutch fork out enough so that the ball and cup is ****** apart. Apply grease onto the end of the ball that goes into the cup. After you greased it up nicely put the clip back into the place. Put the rubber boot back into place. There is also a ball and cup thing in the rubber boot too at the end of the clutch slave cylinder... maybe you'd want to grease that as well. The creaking when you step on the clutch should be gone.

People say to use a thicker grease because it won't break down or melt as easily compared to a thinner grease. The engine bay gets hot and you don't want the grease to just melt away right after you applied it. WD-40 isn't grease I don't think... I don't think it will stand up to high temperature either... I used Molyslip multi-purpose grease when I did mine. But yeah... my problem was at the end of the clutch fork that was INSIDE the tranny housing so I didn't want to spray grease all up in the hole not knowing what I was spraying at. I opted for the more accurate method of putting grease on my fingers and reaching inside.
