clutch $grief

hi all,

instead of just posting my clutch problem, i did a search like a good boy (noisy when clutch NOT pressed, noise GONE when clutch pressed). found a couple threads and read'em:

http://www.torontocivics.com/tccforu...elease+bearing

http://www.torontocivics.com/tccforu...elease+bearing

so from what i can see it's some bearing (everyone has a different idea as to WHICH bearing it is, so it seems), and that it would be best to just replace the entire clutch assembly along with the bearing since the thing's already disassembled.

so if that's the case, i have a couple questions:

1) if i replace the entire clutch, how much would it REALLY cost? ballpark. i actually brought the car in to honda for this problem, and they said to replace the entire clutch assembly, it would cost $1300 - $1400(!!!). so far i'm thinking this is crazy. any suggestions for shops and realistic $estimates would be great.

2) i've also seen the question "what's the best clutch" to get and i've seen people say exedy, clutchmasters, act, etc... but what is it that makes a clutch "good"? and what does it mean when it's "tight", "feels like oem", etc.??? i'm a general clutch newbie so any input would be greatly appreciated.

thanks ya'll,

sane

it's either the throw out bearing or the input shaft bearing thats making the noise.. if it's the input shaft bearing that will require a complete tranny rebuiild

anyways with that said you can probably find a clutch job for between 500 and 700 bucks

It depends on what you want the car to do. If the car is relatively stock, you don't need an aftermarket 6 puck clutch. Every clutch job I do, I get them from a pplace called RPG. Carquest or UAP would have them also. The ones from RPG are made by the same company that make the factory clutches. And they come complete.

Ebay Exedy clutch. 95 bucks American for the clutch and installation should cost around 250 bucks.

what does an aftermarket clutch do for you that a stock one doesn't?

are there really any "performance" gains?

i think its the imput shft bearing.
you get call altech up and ask for joe, he did my clutch and we put an ACT stage 1 with a heavy duty pressure plate.
install was $300 and the clutch with new bearings was $600 approx
