if ya can't hit 5 grand in idle chances are the cat is plugged..
start car and put tranny in neutral, put foot on gas pedal and move towards the floor ????
this was a test we used to do when i was in the tranny biz..
guys would come is thinking the torque convertor was fooked, but it would sometimes turn out the cat was plugged..
oh, and if the cat's plugged it'll be a constant thing, not periodic..

^^ good advice
another way to test it out, run it pretty hard (rev high) for a bit, then look under your car and if you hear like chipping and other weird noises from the cat, that sometimes means its plugged as well.

I had a plugged cat on my Jetta. I'd get to about 4000rpm in fourth and the car would not go any faster (it would actually slow down going up a hill), eventually the car could not go 80km/h. The car felt like it had 25hp and there was a rotten egg smell.
