Civic suspension: How it works??

How to lift inner rear wheel when cornering?

Are there any online pics to describe the various components of the Civic's suspension (preferably 4th gen)

I was mainly wondering if a stiff rear strut tower bar would cause inner wheel lift and/or if a thick rear sway bar would do the same. This is under cornering of course.

A rear strut bar will not cause wheel lift during corning

depending on what kinda suspension set up you have, and using a typ-R rear sway bar you will most likely get a littl bit of wheel lift during heavy corner

wheel lift?! you are trying to get your car to take off I see.. LOL

I have a 6th gen coupe and I'm planning on getting a type R rear-anti sway bar w/beaks reinforcement kit.. I want it to be able to bullet through corners.

if you do some research you'll find that any anti-sway bar thicker than 19mm is too stiff for the civic chassis to handle, and you will end up tearing out your subframe. I beleive the stock SiR bar is 19mm so its safe. anything larger and you'll have to get a reinforcement kit, like the beaks, or you'll have to do some welding work to reinforce the sub-frame.

as for your 4th gen.. I'm not too sure if the type-r bar will mount straight on.

from my research, a rear strut tower bar does nothing but look good.

It does help. It keeps the shock towers from flexing inward and outward during hard turns, and on bumpy roads.


If it did nothing, then Honda is wasting there time by putting it on some of their cars.:working:

I have extensively testing and fine tuning my car for drifts and hard corning, anybody that lives in the east side of scar. might have seen my car (all silver, no trace of black or chrome). I take hard corners everywhere, every corner must be over 60 - 120 nothing less, kid you not, no ones wants to ride in my car anymore. Got friends with 1.8T = 270hp, preludes SH, and WRX. These are some of the things for my resume.
So, when I talk about suspension, I know my suspension well. Honda has designed their suspension differently from other manufactureres. We have the MacPherson and double wishbone steup, this setup is not as strong in cornering, but they were designed to induce negative camber in cornering, so that is why civic can corner more easier and shaper. If you corner like me, then you would have to change tires alot, the inside of the tires are always wear out more than the outer. Maybe you have notice that the rear suspension are independant vs. torsion beam (just one bar across). Torsion beam in the back and MacPherson setup in the front is better for lower springs and those kind of mods. This is the best setup for race, notice Rally cars, Euro. racing, and our Speedvision world challenge races; see those Mazdas just killing Taz Harvey's Civic (ever driven and Mazda, then you know what I am getting at) Learn more about independant susp. here http://www.auto-ware.com/setup/cam_curv.htm Having rear strut bars and sway bars would increase oversteer. Meaning, under conering where you normally brake, the car would swing the rear end more = better cornering, only if you tune right. However, it can cause you to loose control, but if you do your normal driving and cornering your car would feel alot lighter. If you want understeer, have tighter front sway. Just remember, for our Civic and FF cars, hard rear end = oversteer; hard front end = understeer. Want even more oversteer like a rally FF mosts (funny how there aren't any rear wheel cars on the circuit) then lower the rear tire pressure, tune this yourself, but be warn. My next big thing is a LSD, that would give you more control. Then I'll be sliding my car into turns at 70-120km/hr.
