Civic Braking

Hey dudes...

My friend and I were on the QEW heading downtown once to go to class (he was driving) .. we're getting off the QEW (going Eastbound) at Yonge exit.. suddenly we see this civic coming behind us at like 130-140 km/h.. he doesn't realize we're stopped so about 15 meters back.. he slams on the brakes.. all we see is this white smoke coming out of all 4 wheel wells and screeching sounds coming from the tires. and he surves to avoid us and almost goes right into the median!

So... that just goes to show you civic brakes aren't that great

I think we should all invent in Brembo brakes. Rotors, pads, and all...

How much would it cost to get 4 disc brakes on a 2002 civic.. Brembo brand?

Why invest in 4 wheel disc all around, when I think its like rear wheels do 15% of the breaking power.

Like loudsubz said, the back brakes harldy do any work. Just get some good pads, clean rotors (don't have to be x-drilled or anything), get a brake servicing (cleaning of calipers, new fluid, etc) and some SS braided lines and u're all set.

I will be doing this shortly if I can get the cash flow.

Actually I'm interested in getting brembo cross drilled rotors and pads too, and I think other people were too, maybe we can get a GB started on em. Just a thought.

Actually boys, according to most people and most automotive journalists, Honda Civics are known to have weak brakes. It's one of the things that they always skimp on.

Well... I agree with you some what.. but to be honest.. my 2002 civic has proved to me time and time again with it's braking ability. I can't complain. Saved me many times.

Hear me out.

I was on the DVP once going up to Scarbrough to a friend's house. Had 5 people in my car total (including me).. that made the car have an extra 600 lbs or so.. Pretty heavy.. we were travelling about 100 km/h on the DVP in the fast lane.. suddenly this car jammed on it's brakes in front of me (around the corner so I couldn't see it)... It was because of a broken down car in the fast lane. I went from 100 km/h to a dead hault (without locking up my tires or smoking my brake pads) in like 15 meters. It was amazing. I truely swear to god. My stock brakes are pretty good! I just wanna make sure my civic can perform like that. if I had rear ended that guy.. everybody would have been dead in my car. THat's why I inspect my brake pads each time I wash my car. Just to make sure those beauties will save me again.

However.. I'm interested in getting Brembos. Maybe a GB is a good idea I dunno if the older civic brakes are as good. The car that I told you at the very top post was an older civic. It was the same model as "Civic Boy's" civic.. just without all the mods.

Amazing. I love my civic. Great car for it's value. Brembos would make a great car even better

People....Brembo rotors will not make a difference in braking unless you're going with the whole Brembo kit - 13" rotors and calipars.

If you want somewhat better braking power, just pick up some ss brake lines and a set of good pads.

Meh, I gotta change my rotors anyways (theyre warped) so I might as well invest in better rotors while I have an excuse to buy them lol. As for the SS brake lines, how much do they go for? And what kind of pads do you think I should get?

So this guy went from 130-140 to 0 in 15 metres - sounds pretty good to me.

I'm no engineer but here's my thinking. If the brakes locked up to the point where the wheels arent turning and the tires are smoking - how are more powerful brakes gonna help? - If the existing brakes have already stopped the wheels from turning, the only thing that would help at that point is a bigger contact patch with the road to create more friction - ie bigger tires.

grego: you're right, if your rotors do need to be changed then go ahead and pick up Brembos. That's what I've been doing. But keep in mind, that there's no difference in stopping power. If you're debating on what kind of pads to use, then try PBR pads. That's what I've been using for the past 5 years and I have no complaints. Pretty good for a street pad. As for SS brake lines. They go for about $200 a set.
