city driving-manual tranny

ok here it is... say im drivin 45 (in 4th gear) down a big street and i pull up to a stop light or sign...when i brake and clutch is it better to row thru tha gears or can i come to a stop and put it in 1st directly from 4th? i think i remember hearing it was kinda bad on the clutch or tranny, but i dont remember. common sense seems like rowing through the gears- 4th to 3rd to 2nd to 1st- would put more wear, but if i knew, i wouldnt be askin ya. so can u help me

when about to brake, take it out of gear, come to a complete stop then put it into 1st. dont put it into 1st unless your at a complete stop, thats what screws it up

The old guys will tell you that what stresses the syncros in your gearbox most is downshifting, so yes, rowing down the gears as you come to a stop is stressing the transmission. Especially going into 1st before coming to a complete stop. Not to mention the stress on the rest of the drivetrain. And it`s not really necessary because the brakes will do the job just fine.

All that said, if you like downshifting why not? Enjoying the driving experience is what it's all about! I personally love to get the smoothest, quickest throttle-blipped 4th to 3rd downshift I can, every chance I get.

You can downshift and be rough on your tranny/clutch, or you can pop it in neutral and be rough on your brakes.
Personally, I blip the throttle and downshift while driving, its become a habit.

i was told that putting in neutral is the same as popin in the clutch is there any truth to that, i mean, if it isn't in gear then i guess its gotta be on the clutch right? and if your gonna pop it in neutral to stop, then arent you just idling on your clutch, putting wear on your clutch?

If I see a yellow a mile away, I'll throw it in neutral, clutch out, and coast to a stop. If I have to use any brakes at all, I'll throw it in one gear lower and coast IN that gear till I can either get back to going (if light turns green) or lift off and engine brake all the way to a stop. Then throw it in neutral, clutch out. Only time it's BAD to skip gears is HIGH RPM situations like hard acceleration. On the way down, esp if you've stopped and your tranny is in neutral, clutch out, there is no reason why you can't slip it into 1st, regardless of what gear you were in before that.

I say coast in neutral until you come to a complete stop.
Way I think of it is, which 1 costs more to replace? Clutch.
I'll let my brakes do the grunt work.
I do admit do downshift sometimes though.
5,4,3,2 and 1st only if i'm doing less than 10kmh.
