Chipping my D16

I have a 1999 Honda Civic (DX) Hatchback.

D16Y7 1593 106@6200 103@4600 9.4:1 75 90 sohc non-vtec OBD2 1996-2000 Civic DX/LX/CX

I am going to be doing a swap, either to a K20 or B16/B18, but that is not until February (unless a good deal comes along on an engine/install).

I have heard these wonder stories about Chippin' the ECU, and have a hard time believing a 10-15WHP increase just by simply chippin' it.

Anyone know much about this? Is this even worth the 75$ or whatever it is?

Any suggestions? I wish my car was simply vtec'd so until feb it would not be as gutless as it is..

dont waste your money.

chipping your ecu on a completely stock motor isn't worth the money. You could gain a few whp (depends on which motor) but it would be a waste of money if you are going to upgrade later.

considering that you would need to buy an obd1 ecu, chip it and get an obd2-obd1 ecu conversion harness, i don't think that it would be worth it to you.
Now if you plan on doing a B-series swap and modding it, converting to obd1 and running a chipped ecu would be beneficial. But only if you get a custom chip made after you do your swap and mods. Generic chips are crap and DON'T add 10-15whp. Shops around here charge $150 to chip an ecu, you'll pay $100 for a obd ecu and another $100 for an obd2-obd1 harness.
But there are people on this board that will chip an ecu for much less than shops charge (pm me for more info on who and how much).
But you can't chip obd2 ecus. And if you plan on doing a K swap don't waste your money converting to obd1 b/c you won't be able to use that ecu.

big difference in $$$$ for a k-series compared to a b-series...

i do chipping, and let me tell u

1. u dont make 10-15hp, unless ur tuned and chipped, the reality is about 3-5hp and same tq.

2. cost is about 80$ for chipping.

3 seeing as u have a 99 u also need to convert to OBD1 before u can do it.

1. Waste of time.
2. Waste of money.
3. Waste of a chip.
4. Waste of dyno time.
