check engine light

check engine light

hey guys i got a 89 civic si with a sohc zc swap, i jsut bought this car a few months ago and whatthe prob is, is that say im pushing her hard and racing her and crap the damn check engine light always comes on and stays on......the car only does this if im beating upon it and redlining it alot, the light comes on but the car still runs like a charm, also sometimes if i let the car sit for like an hr or not evne that when i start it again its gone....but the light only comeson when im pushin her hard, got any ideas?

yeah there's really no way of telling what wrong without the code thats in the ECU...

its most likely 02 sensor code, the EF non-obd system tends to do that.

lift the passanger carpet, look and count the numbers of flashes on the ecu.

long blink = 10
short blink = 1

i was thinking maybe having an after market header, and cat might b the reason y....my buddys prelude used to do the sam thing, it wouldnt come on till he reallygot on the car and the guys at the shop where he had his exhaust done said its not uncommon for the check engine light to come on wioth after market header and catb/c its flowing that much extra air when ur gettin on it and it sets the sensor off

k i went out and checked and it showed a code (14) and a code (17).......one is the vss vehicle speed sensor and the other is the idle air control, now what do these mean and is this bad or not somethign to really worry about?

definitly an 02 sensor problem, when more exhaust is passing through the 02 sensor prolly has large build up of carbon around it, and is very hard to do it's job when high flow of exhaust is passing it

hmmmm does this affect performance in any way and also how mch to replace?....my buddy blew his o2 sensor and it was like 2 billsa nd change as i recall....so thats what those two codes would mean?......and isnt it weird how the light only comes on after iv raced or redlined the car a few times, if i jsut cruise and take it easy it dont come on

while driving down the road push in the clutch and either turn the key to restart it or let out the clutch the light should shut off every time does that in Gf's Ef so i just turn the key off and turn it back to the On position and it starts cuz obviously while doing *0 K an automatic tranny will bum start itself
