Check Engine Light On - 04 Cvic Si

ok, so while merging on the 401 around 5 or so today, i was in 2nd gear going around 40km/hr when the bend straightened out and i gave it some gas, then at like 4000rpm it made a noise almost like a rev limiter or something... and dropped down, then it drove perfectly fine, but it won't go over 4000rpm... i only tried once more in 3 rd and the same thing...

i called honda while driving and he's like 100 to check it out... sounds like a mis-shift or bent valve or something... well, i wasn't shifting and i don't know if i bent a valve at 4000rpm... so i called again and talked to someone else after i pulled over and gave the car a look over... no smoke, no noises...... i had a feeling... its an si and they have vtec... maybe something to do with that... so, the engine had no oil in it... we put some in... 2 litres and its halfway up the stick...

the next service advisor i talked to checked with an associate there and he said if i was out of oil chances are vtec disengaged because it will do that and the computer should be not allowing me to drive over that rpm as a precaiutionary measure maybe... and since vtec doesn't work... he told me to drive around for 2 days monitoring the oil and the light should turn off... any suggestions??? oooh... and in neutral... it revs past 4000rpm no problem... i know vtec doesn't engage in neutral... soo maybe?????????????

BTW, its my dad's car and he thinks i blew the engine which i was driving it slower than my grandma drives at the time... Thanks!!!

HONDA OWNS MIKE

hondas dont like you lol im just kidding man...

your car is faster than mine right now...

mine is on jacks :D

Seems like what Honda told you about the engine staying out of vtec is true, as it engages at ~4500rpm I believe on the 7th gen Si's.

Are 04 civics still obd2? My mechanic will probably hook up his reader for way cheaper then 100....

imported_mikepasini 25-May-2006 02:42 AM

hey man, if you can throw me the number i will give him a call tomorrow... or today i guess now. yeah, is obd2....

well, after topping it off with oil, it now revs past 4000... after driving it for a bit tonight... still a CEL, but maybe in 2 days it will go away like the dealer said... we'll have to wait and see i guess!

Bryce 25-May-2006 02:58 AM

mike i have doms number ill give it to you call him tomorrow at 430

what happened to the oil in the engine?

you should tell your dad to learn to put oil in there first before accusing you of blowing the motor.

Same thng I was wondering. What are you doing driving a car without oil??

Bryce 25-May-2006 07:51 PM

his pops wasnt putting in oil like he should have been. aint mikes fault.,

newman 25-May-2006 09:27 PM

First top up the oil. But you say its halfway up the dipstick, is it really halfway up or bewteen the two holes. Maybe it was fine and you now overflowed it.

The computer is probably now in limp mode and now needs to be reset for the light to go out and for vtec to engage.

Dominik 26-May-2006 06:22 PM

Try to reset the ecu first. Unhook the battery. Let it idle for a bit and drive it with spirit but not hard. See if v-tec kicks, if it doesn;t then you can come by the shop and we'll hook up the reader....

chris_si98 26-May-2006 06:28 PM

you had low oil pressure. Top up the oil (with the proper oil) and then reset the ecu.

imported_mikepasini 26-May-2006 10:13 PM

how long should i leave the battery unhooked? both positive and negative?

imported_Team Rukus 27-May-2006 01:41 AM

pull out the backup fuse and unhook the postive for about 2 or 3 mins. be prepared to have things like radio code ready.

imported_mikepasini 27-May-2006 11:42 AM

alright, that should be in the dash... we'll give it a try... is that the same **** honda does to get rid of your CEL for $$$$$?

imported_Joe_98Si 27-May-2006 12:20 PM

no honda will hook up a scan tool and clear the codes
