cheaper shock alternative???

I need new shocks for my car and would love to spend $600 on KYB AGX's but I need new tires too (another $600 !) and as I plan on getting a new civic within two years I am would prefer to spend less on this car if possible.

Is there a cheaper shock alternative that would still work with my lowered springs? (ie ive heard stock shocks blow out quickly with lowered springs).

Thanks in advance for your advice and opions

Phil

KYB GR2... a little weak, but they won't blow.

I suppose... considering you're selling the car, yes. Generally, GR2s can be had for about $60USD a piece, whereas AGXs go for about $90 USD ea. That's the lowest level shock that I'd put on, the GR2... the Tokico Blue is the next level up I guess. Why not get cheaper ones still from Carquest or CT or NAPA, you know, ones with lifetime replacement, so every time they blow, just take them in for a new free one. Since you are doing the labour, it costs you nothing.

if Tokico Blues are the same as stock....
wouldn't the GR2's be 'less than' stock?

supposedly the blue is a tougher version of the same valving... the GR2s are like 20% stiffer valving, but I'm not sure how tough they are... some ppl swear by them, but my buddy with a Talon had them for 2 years on Ground Control coilovers and he had to replace them after.. they got too soft. Plus, I think KYB has the best priced shocks, blues are slightly more $$ I think.

Bruno,

I was kinda wondering if someone might say that the Monroe shocks from crappy tire are better than stock but a lot cheaper than KYB's and maybe good enough for the job. I'll price them out - I was trying to price out the GR2's on the KYB website but it doesnt seem to be brining ANY shock up for my car - must be a glitch in the system.

Cosmic (Alan isn't it?), Mind me asking what a set of Koni Red's would be worth - I don't need installation.

Thanks guys
