changing timing belt
Okay so 2001 civic 4dr its at about 170k and the timing belt has not been changed yet.
Its my parents car and im looking to do this myself. I have been in and around that area before while working on my car but never specifically changed the timing belt.
I have all the tools (other then a torque wrench, and timing light)
Just curious to see if anybody here would be able to help me out a bit here. I would come down to whereever you are at and do all of the work and also if anything goes wrong dont worry i know it would not be your fault at all I would just feel more comfortable doing this with somebody who has done this before.
Anyways let me know thanks a lot

if you are not familiar or comfortable changing a timing belt I would not advise doing so. A misaligned belt can cause irrepairable damage to your engine.
My advise is to have it changed by a professional, in the long run you will probably end up saving cash aswell as a major headache if things go wrong.
You may already be aware that the d17 engine is a clearance motor, but with 170k carbon deposits build up which can in some cases cause clearance issues with the valve & the piston. If there is a clearance issue and the timing belt is misaligned your engine will need to be replaced. Also, if the belt is misaligned by even one tooth the engine may still run, but you will lose both economy & power as a result.
1 final thought is the crank pulley, 50% of the time they will require either heat or an impact gun for proper removal, if you do not have those tools I would advise against performing the work yourself.
THis was all just to advise you of the risks & what you will need to properly accomplish the timing belt job on your civic. If you require more specific information, please feel free to send me a PM

T belts arent the hardest thing, just like anything take your time, dont loose any parts. Getting the crank pully off is going to be fun. Get yourself a good manual. And you dont need a timing light or a torque wrench as long as you have a well calibrated wrist

It's not really a tough job depending on your mechanical abilities and the tools you have..the breaker bar is your friend. On top of that you dont really need a torque wrench (though it is recommended)...and you dont need a timing light unless you somehow move your car during the change...keep the cam gear at TDC and you wont have a problem
I'd estimate the job to take 10-12 hours with no experience.
