CEL - engine guys quick question please

Hey guys. Just wondering if i could get some opinions. I don't notice any problems driving my 97 cx Hatch with a 1.6 B16a1 transplant. (bought it around aug 05) Anyway, recently during regular driving the CEL light comes on (either while idling or just cruising on the hwy) anyways, the light remains on while the car is on, but when i turn the car off and back on, the light goes off. It will remain off for a couple of days, then suddenly it will come on again when im driving randomly...and the process repeats itself.

Not sure if this is in regards to a sensor, but has anyone experienced something like this before? To get the best diagnosis, should I have it hooked up, cuz really if it's not causing a problem, i'm not sure if i wanna drop cash down to fix it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

well the car is throwing a code which means something is at fault. scan the car when the code is present and see what it is.

yea thats kinda the problem...the light is off more than it is on...so it'd have to keeep turning the car to acc and off until it appears

Take it to a shop that has a proper scanner and they can scan it for current and memory codes.

do a self check instead of taking it to a shop.
when the light comes on.
take either a piece of wire or a paper clip wedge it in the plug between the two pin holes and then the light will flash once it starts flashing take down how many long flashes and how many short flashes then compare that to the CEL outline chart and you can see what the problem is.

if you dont know what I am talking about check the archieves or maintenance section in engine tech here and you will see a detailed info on how to find the plug and loop it and how to read the code after you obtain it.

just bring it to a shop if you got time... its worth the inspection and immediate fix...

plus, imo, it would've been a better idea to drop in a b16a2 instead of the a1 into an EK....

yea why would you go a1 motor on a newer car? money?

civicnation 18-Jan-2006 02:06 PM

I dunno :shrugs: ask civic boy

he's the one that did the swap in the first place

Team Rukus, thanks I'll give that a shot

anyone know how much it'd cost for the diagnostic?

imported_slowandfurious 19-Jan-2006 10:41 AM

Seen some places cost around $100, i'm sure you could get it cheaper at some small shops

ok..i had that prob in my ef when i had my b16 if i got cheap and used 87 octane fuel. r u using 89 at least? i know it sucks cause you cant even get a code cause if you turn the car of to check the problem is gone.

I have recently switched back to 87...i think for the last 2 fillups...will be going back to 89 at least...but i still think the light went on during that time...

ya you might wanna try to go at least 91 octane. I had a b16a1 in a DA before and I used to get an occasional CEL if I used anything less then 91 octane. 99% of the time I used ultra94 but if I was desperate I would use 91.

That B16a1 has a 10.2 compression ratio, it requires higher octane. If I remember right I think they recommend 91 octane but I could be wrong

I have exact same problem. Ever since I gutted my catty and installed my headers. About 2-3 mths ago the CEL stayed on and my o2 sensor was fried....then I changed it and same thing is happening. Really does suck cuz when u shut it off theres no code :(
