cat or no cat

Cat or no cat, that is the question. I understand all the emission and exhaust laws in place, etc. BUT if you had a straight pipe rather than a cat would there be a performance gain?? I heard once that newer vehicles "require" cats and without will not run properly (i.e. actually lose power). Anyone know the facts??

well if you're car is obd-2 and you put on a test pipe, or remove the cat, you'll probably get a CEL b/c your secondary o2 sensor reading will be off.
Its a hefty fine if you get caugh without a cat. I run a high flow cat just to be safe. Plus i'm not fond of how damn loud cars are without a cat.
