Guys ,

Just one question . Do you actually hear the fuel pump kick in when you switch on . Listen carefully when you swith the key to the on eposition without rushing go step by step .

When the check engine light goes off along with it you will hear the sound of the fuel pump kicking in if you do not hear it do not bother to start just switch it off and try again continue only if you hear the fuel pump kick in as if not it's not going to start .

Sorry If I have miss understoon the whole concept of this issue .

Just give it a try.

Hey guys,

I finally had some spare time and made another (unsuccessful) attempt. I picked up a used disty off another forum member (Known to be in good condition) with wires. After replacing both wires and distributor with this new(er) one, same result. Car cranks but never starts.

1) Tried two distributors and sets of wires

2) Have tried cranking with my other car's battery and have also used jumper cables. The car's battery is definitely weak without assitance of external power source, but even when hooked up on life support, the thing never starts.

3) I definitely hear the fuel pump whirring in the gas tank.

4) I can usually smell gas in the engine bay after attempting to start the car

5) Last time I checked, I was getting spark on each wire.

6) I tried 2 sets of known-to-be-good spark plugs

7) "bump starting" doesn't get it going.

Is it possible I have a corroded ground wire somewhere or I accidental disconnected a ground wire? The obvious ones -- battery and tranny are there. I replaced the tranny one with one I made out of thick audio cable and copper contacts (Old wire looked corroded). Are there other grounds I'm not taking into consideration? Also, my negative battery cable doesn't really tighten properly around the battery (I just noticed this). I can force it off the battery terminal with some force, but otherwise it does make a connection.

Can anyone shed some light? I'm trying to avoid taking the car to the mechanic because it cost me next to nothing. What else could it be? Anything I can test that will give me a 'smoking gun' as to my problem? Any fuses I can check? The ones in the engine bay seem fine.

I'm pretty sure I have the right firing order. The cables were already attached to the disty and I compared it to the ones I removed and they were the same.

I have a feeling my timing is off... hopefully no physical damage to the engine...

I've never done timing myself. Think it's something I should take in, or is it something I can tackle with a timing gun and a buddy?

setting timing is extremely easy. When I get home from work I'll explain it or send you a link. I believe there is one on c-speed racing actually.

Make SURE your firing order is correct. Set the motor to TDC, take off the cap, look at the rotor that is number #1.

From there put the wires at 1-3-4-2 in a counter clockwise fashion I believe.

NUmber 1 cylinder is closest to the timing belt.

I ended up taking it to the mechanic... he tried some starter fluid in the intake and nada... He thinks the timing is off and suspects I need a new engine. Kind of crazy :/ It was running fine just before all of this :/
