car problems HELP!

I wanted to buy this car off my friend. He said the car has just started overheating and the coolant is coming out of the reservoir. He said it might be the headgasket but i dun see any bubbles on the rad cap. The fan turns on too and he said he went on the freeway and the car overheated or something. He said it could be the thermostat or the headgasket. What is the best way to determine what the problem is. We both haven't purchase the car so we dun want to spend any $$$ fixing it yet until we find the problem. This car is his friends friend car. I think it could be the radiator restricted inside because the rad overheats on the highway. I never drove the car so i dunno what the problem is because i plan to buy it. Any suggestions to see if it is the headgasket or other problems. If it isn't headgasket i think i would purchase the car. The car is a 92 eg hb automatic. the car also has a si engine put in, but i dunno how long ago. Any reply would be great thanx.

I will check. If the upper and lower hose are both hot that means the thermostat is ok rite?

wrong....under normal conditions upper rad hose is suppse to be hotter than lower rad hose....doesn't mean lower rad hose is cold..just not as hot as upper....if the difference is too great, it's restriction and faulty thermostat is a possible reason for it....that or the heater core due to rust and stuff

usually bubbling coolant overflow is a sign of headgasket problems.
