the easiest way to determine if the fan switch is working, is to simply warm up the car, stop, get out and look to see if its running. A good ear could probably hear it turn on, but its not hard to look and see. My car was over heating at TMP a few weeks ago, and we did all kinds of test.. If the top rad hose is 'hot' the system is circulating (which means thermostat is ok, pump is ok). if its 'squishy' you might have air bubbles... but you gotta check that fan. that was one of the first checks.
I'm swapping my rad and all my hoses out next week... and then going back to TMP to see if the problem is solved

thanks for the advice y'all.....the reason i think its the fan switch or rely or ECT is because when ever i drive its not over heating...like lately i have been driving around with no problems...even at red light....its after i guess long periods of driving time..thas when it starts to overheat...i am assuming if it was the headgasket then the car would start over heating right off the bat....but its weird.
