car getting louder

ok, so we've all seen those old ass beaters that you can hear from a mile away, not because of their muffler but b/c their engine is so damn loud.

well my car is getting there and i don't know why, i've noticed that even in park, or i'm stopped at a light if i roll my windows down and turn off the music i can hear sounds coming from my hood, louder than b4, is there anything i can do?

my car is 9 years old, but i've stayed on top of basic maintenance (oil chnges etc) it's got about 180 k on it.

U got to explain more, loud as in exhaust noise or engine noise? Check the oil first if it is engine noise. Maybe u are low on oil. It could be your belts or alt pump, or other thing that causes the noise. I need more info. Maybe u need valve adjustments. U hear the engine ticking?

Is it like excessive ticking? I just did a valve lash adjustment on my GF's 94 hatch and now it so much quieter.

The intake valves were pretty much 4 mm too loose all across. The exhaust valve were fine.

What do you mean by that? Do you mean when you have been driving your car for a while and then you park it and you hear a ticking from the engine until it cools down?

a car that requires a valve adjustment usually ticks when you first start it up while the engine is cool and not so much once the engine has warmed up.

no ticking, it's more like the humming sound of the engine running, no sounds after i turn it off, no difference whether or not it is cold or warm. imagine standing with the hood popped and listening to your car, that's kinda what it sounds like in my car (not so loud though)

My first thought too bro!! LOL

Inspect around the exhaust manifold for any black smoke residue
leading to a small crack. Also check for visible signs of smoke coming from the area.

Is it a vibration noise, exhaust noises, ticking noise, knocking noise? or as you say humming noise- that may relate to a cracked exhaust manifold.

P.S The exhaust manifold is very hot!! careful
