Can't get my crankshaft pulley off!!
 

I can't seem to get my crankshaft pulley bolt loose, I know these are famous for being a pain in the ass but geez I'm out of ideas... I need to get it off 'cause my water pump is screwed.

I've tried an impact gun without luck and tried putting two engine mount bolts through the holes in the pulley and jamming a crowbar in between to hold the pulley, reefed on the bolt with a 1/2" ratchet and a pole on the handle, only to tear the mount bolts right through the pulley, busting two chunks out of the pulley! WTF!?

Has anyone done this a different way? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Maybe I'll try to find someone with a stronger impact gun...

one method is to lock the flywheel with a pryebar and then release the pulley bolt.. it's tough, but i've done it numerous times.

Do a search, this topic has been discussed a few times

try a more powerful impact wrench and switch positions. Do a quick blast in forward, then a couple secs in reverse, short blast in forward and couple more seconds in reverse, sometimes thats enough to break it loose.

get the proper crank holding tool with any impact wrench it will come off... soak some liquid wrench on it for a few hours too

any penetrant wont really work that well cause you can put it right on the threads, spraying it on the bolt will just clean the head of the bolt thats it :D

Unfortunately the first person to do a timing belt on my car (I wasn't the owner at the time) decided to use red LOCKTITE on the bolt when they put it back in.
I tried locking the flywheel but ended up breaking the transmission case in the bellhousing area(Thank you JB weld)

I ended up having to heat the bolt with a torch and use a 3/4" drive impact gun to get it off.

Wow, never heard of anyone breakin the tranny case like that! hahah.. I got 1 metre long breaker bar.. serious torque :)

someone suggested to hold the pulley with a pair of chain vice-grips... I dunno if anyone's tried it but i dunno if they would hold on tight enough

heat it up red hot, spray it with some water to get it cold, then try again, thats what i did with mine

No need to spray with water, rapid cooling of the head of the bolt is going to do nothing to free the shank (external) threads of the bolt from the internal threads in the crank.

Just heat it till it's slightly orange then just put the impact on it. If you get the bolt too hot, the heat transfers into the crank and you'll risk ruining the seal for the crank (oil pump side) out.

trackhack knows!!! plus rapid cooling changes the crystal structure of the metal, making it brittle (that's why cast parts are hard + brittle).

yea my home compressor wasnt strong enough for mine so i took it to a shop and used there air they had like 175 psi and i used my ingersoll rand gun and it came off like nothin soaked it in liquid wrench first though

conviced a guy at crappy tire to pound the thing off for me... took him 3 different impact guns geez
